25 Years Ago

  • Chamber of Commerce president, Daryl Maguire, said that Christmas trading is picking up after a slow start with a late rush expected on the weekend.
  • General Manager of M C Croker grain merchants, Greg Carroll said that this year’s grain harvest had been excellent with more grain still on the way.
  • Stan Sadlier was presented with a plaque recognising his service to the club as president from 1963 to 1995 by new president, Bill Ellis.
  • Middle distance track queen, Melanie Bradley, has gained selection in the Australian junior track and field team.
  • A 12-year-old boy who was savagely mauled by a rottweiler dog was rushed to Wagga Base Hospital with severe wounds to his right arm.
  • The Haven has raised $65,000 from staff and members of the community to purchase a new bus to provide residents with greater access to activities outside the facility.
  • Wagga City Council will call for expressions of interest in the establishment of security parking and a service station at the Wagga Airport.
  • Japanese Rotary Peace Ambassador Motonobu made a special presentation to the City of Wagga on behalf of Japan’s first Rotary Peace City, Kobe.
  • Chief Superintendent, Eric Gollan, presented Joan Jenkins with a replica of her father, George Jenkins police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
  • Director of clinical services at Wagga Base Hospital, Paul Curtis, said that elective surgery will continue over the holiday period to decrease waiting lists.
  • Anglican Archdeacon of Wagga, Stephen Williams, handed the keys to two new eight-bedroom cottages at St Martins College to Charles Sturt University deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Bob Meyenn.
  • The NSW Department of Fair Trading has opened a new one-stop Fair Trading Centre in Wagga.
  • The intersection of Tarcutta and Johnston Streets heads Wagga City Council’s list for intersection improvements following eight accidents there last year.
  • Newly elected North Wagga Australian Football Club president Christine Harwood is only the second female president following Edna Quirk who was at the helm the 1950’s.
  • More than 1000 speeding drivers caught in the Wagga area between 1987 and 1990 will get partial refunds after eight mobile radar instruments were found to be faulty.

50 Years Ago

  • Following a trend of recent years many families gave up their own Christmas dinner this year to lunch and dine at clubs and hotels with more than 400 participating in the traditional Christmas lunch at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • More than 700 people attended midnight mass celebrated by the Bishop of Wagga, Bishop F. Carroll at St. Michael’s Cathedral.
  • Members of the Taber family were among those attending the Christmas service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. D Mackenzie Baird.
  • Catering Officer, Mrs M Mitchell and staff prepared Christmas lunch for 195 patients and staff at Wagga Base Hospital.
  • Wagga City Pistol Club, president, Robert Peacock said that the club is providing free training in the use of pistols for staff members of Wagga banks.
  • Wagga Quota Club presented a cheque Sister M Helen and Sister M Ignatius at Calvary Hospital for the purchase of a recovery bed in the recovery ward at present under construction.
  • Palings are advertising musical gifts for Christmas including mouth organs for 75 cents, ukuleles for $3, drum sticks for 75 cents and recorders for $1.45.
  • Mayoress, Mrs M Gissing presented badges at the Red Cross Christmas Party to blood donors who have given 25 or more pints of blood.
  • Wagga Base Hospital is adverting a traineeship in Radiology for an applicant between 17 and 24 years of age and a commencing salary of $31.80 per week.
  • Turvey Park Australian Rules Football Club, President, Jim Egan, and Secretary Reg Rynehart presented life membership certificates to five members at the Club’s Christmas Social.
  • Wagga identity, Eric Weissel, won a $150 hamper in a competition conducted by Rava’s and Hoover Australia.
  • Wagga Leagues Club opened an extended Mixed Lounge.
  • Wagga Leagues Club presented Christmas gifts to elderly folk at the Loreto Home of Compassion.
  • Eric Cuthbertson of the Department of Agriculture is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Eric Williams examining a fine harvest of lupins, the Riverina’s newest high yield, high return crop.
  • Master Hairdressers, Stephen and Irene Lakner at 94 Fitzmaurice Street are advertising a wide range of services in the Daily Advertiser.
  • Two monster Murray Cod, one 26 pounds and the other 61 pounds were hauled from the Murrumbidgee River at Collingullie.
