25 Years Ago

  • Don Paul was presented with a Premiers Award, by Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp recognising the many facets of his community service over many years.
  • The Wagga Chamber of Commerce and Industry and South Wagga Lions are conducting a joint project called “Operation Santa Claus” to create a Christmas theme in the central business district.
  • Bill Ellis, John Gray, Kevin Wales, and Brian Lawrence were among dignitaries joining Riverina Australian Rules Club president, Ross Ingram for the opening of extensions at the RAFC.
  • The Ashmont Public Tenants Group is recommending a ban on drinking in Webb Park at Ashmont.
  • Successful entrepreneur, Dick Smith flew by helicopter to the property of Sid and Patricia Clarke at Ladysmith for the inauguration of their environmentally friendly dairy waste system.
  • Fiji scored an impressive victory over Wagga in the open age invitational cricket match at the Wagga Cricket ground.
  • Wagga Christian College inaugural Year 12 class, including Belinda Colley, Michelle Flint, Rebecca Green, Johanna Graham and Prue Asimus, held a formal dinner at the old Wagga Inn.
  • A 23-year-old Wagga woman, beaten with a baseball bat and later shot in her Ashmont home is recovering in Wagga Base Hospital.
  • St Michael’s Regional High School principal congratulated Tony Gill on being awarded Dux of the School.
  • Long standing teacher at St Michael’s Regional High School who died earlier this year at the age of 56 has bequeathed $36,000 and several other items to the school.  
  • Wagga Gun Club presented awards to Michael Rooke, Tony Wright, Liz Thatcher, Dianne Kneebone, and Wayne Burton.
  • Bookings are open for a four-course traditional Christmas lunch at the Old Wagga Inn including a visit from Santa for $49 per adult and $25 for children under 13.
  • The Tooheys NSW Snooker Championships are being played at the Wagga Leagues Club.

50 Years Ago

  • The International Club arranged for St Nicholas to meet the Mayor, Ald. Harris on the steps of the Council Chambers before walking through the main street with gifts for children.
  • David Jones has announced that its Wagga store will close on New Year’s Eve.
  • Wagga City Council Industrial Promotions Officer, Mr Joe MacManamon is leaving on a two-month holiday-business trip overseas.
  •  The Riverina CWA Group Choir provided a touch of Christmas spirit to residents at The Haven and the Home of Compassion.
  • Jim Egan has been re-elected unopposed as president of the Turvey Park Australian Rules Football Club.
  • Twelve-year-old Turvey Park Primary School student, Warwick Eather has been selected in the NSW Primary Schools’ interstate cricket team.
  • The Wagga RSL Club held a dinner dance to mark the opening of new additions and alterations to the club costing $400,000.
  • Members of the Wagga singing group, The Dominie Singers celebrated their recent wins on TCN-9’s New Faces and the Wagga Eisteddfod at the Bengal Restaurant.
  • Ald Morris Gissing was elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Wagga with Ald Geoghegan elected as Deputy Mayor.
  • Huthwaites are advertising imported men’s shirts by Markham for just $3.25.
  • Council decided to build a new dressing shed, public toilets and kiosk at Wagga Beach estimated to cost $13,000.
  • Wagga Rotary Club and the Road Safety Council are conducting free car safety checks at several Wagga service stations.
  • More than 230 apprentices from Forest Hill RAAF Base have made donations from their wages to purchase fans for the Gumleigh Boys’ home.
