The Wagga Wagga Main Street Projectis a co-operative project between the Museum of the Riverina & Charles Sturt University Regional Archives. The project will culminate in a major exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina in the latter part of 2013.
The exhibition will:
- Examine the changing streetscapes of Fitzmaurice and Baylis Streets
- Trace the history of key buildings and sites, from the Hampden Bridge to Edward Street
- Peel back layers in time on selected businesses and offices
- “Visit” the people within the buildings
Themes covered will include hotels, cafes, motor car dealers, banks, public offices (court house, post office, etc.), music shops, chemists, et al. Nancy Blacklow is doing the research for the project and any assistance that members of the Society, or the public generally, can provide will be greatly appreciated. The Main Street Project is one that the Society strongly endorses. The outcome will be a well researched and documented history of our main street premises and the people associated therewith. The benefits that will flow from this project are substantial, not the least will be the availability of enhanced detail for development of “historical walking tours“. If members can assist with relevant information, photos, artefacts, or stories, it will be appreciated if they could contact CSU Regional Archives (Ph: 6925 3666).
