25 Years Ago

  • Inductees into the Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame and their representatives gathered with Mayor, Peter Dale and Deputy Mayor, Kay Hull for a Civic Reception at the Council Chambers.
  • Simon Swan, information technology manager of Mission Employment in Murray Street has announced the first commercial access to the internet available in the region following their launch of the Riverina Community Network.
  • Charles Sturt University Winery won the most successful exhibitor award at the National Small Winemakers Show and also beat 70 entrants to win the W E Ware Trophy for the best dry red medium bodied table wine at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show Championship.
  • After more than 30 years at the helm of Wagga RSL Club, Stan Sadlier did not seek re-election as president and has been succeeded by former Town Clerk, Bill Ellis.
  • Ted Egan, Greg Chambers and Jim Haynes are travelling to Wagga to launch their new song You Don’t Call Wagga Wagga, Wagga.
  • Leading Wagga businessman, sportsman, benefactor, and philanthropist Cecil William (Cec) Toy has died aged 90.
  • Wollundry Rotary Secretary, Graham Hornibrook, has requested $10,000 compensation from Wagga City Council following the council’s recent sale of the Berry Street carpark to Woolworths which has forced the club to relocate its popular Sunday Markets.
  • A $1 million proposal by Damasa Pty Ltd to construct a six-screen cinema at the lower end of Fitzmaurice Street was approved without dissent by Wagga City Council after being recommended by Director of Environmental Services, Ian Graham.
  • The Daily Advertiser has purchased a new printing press valued at $3.2 million which has been installed in a new press hall built at a cost of $1.24 million.
  • Councillors John Harding, Lindsay Vidler, Kay Hull, Pat Brassil and Jim Eldridge have been appointed as chairmen of key Wagga City Council Committees.
  • A free shuttle bus was one of several ideas proposed by a meeting of main street retailers convened by the Wagga Main Street Committee and its interim chairman, Bob Connolly.
  • Four Daily Advertiser journalists, Garth Norris, Gary Bell, Jim Hutchinson and Phil Sheather have reached the national finals of the W G Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism.
  • Amanda Nixon, Carlie Robertson, Brooke Daniher and Catherine Lawson were presented with best and fairest awards by the Turvey Park Netball Club.
  • Brian Lawrence, a director of Wagga Leagues Club since 1979 has been re-elected unopposed as Club President.

50 Years Ago

  • The Southern Riverina County Council’s new $750,000 headquarters in Johnston Street were officially opened by Minister for Mines and Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife.
  • Members of the Wagga Fire Brigade had considerable success at the recent State Fire Brigade Demonstration at Port Macquarie.
  • South Wagga Apex is conducting an essay competition for Wagga school students entitled, Wagga should be chosen for selective decentralisation because….
  • Wagga City Council has accepted a tender for $66,214 for the construction of the crematorium building at the Wagga Lawn Cemetery from Kooringal builders, Jacques and Kancans.
  • Mr Ken Buntain, manager of 2WG presented the 2WG South Wagga Lions Club Road Safety Shield to Phillip Elliott, captain of the Mt Austin Public School quiz team.
  • Cyclops children’s toys including trikes, dinkies strollers and scooters are being advertised as birthday or Christmas toys by Huthwaites, the friendly store.
  • Ray Paton received the Kangaroos first grade best and fairest award as well as the most improved player award.
  • Ten Southern Riverina County Council workers shared the $40,000 second prize in the Opera House Lottery.
  • Wagga’s new Community Social Welfare office for Community Aid Officer, Mrs Ann Gorman and members of the Inter Church Action Group opened in the Gissing Building in Fitzmaurice Street.
  • The Wagga Skindiving Club is holding classes for beginners on Sunday mornings at the Wagga baths.
  • Mr Neville Chappell of Tarcutta escorted Miss Dale St. George to the Rural Youth Dinner held at Romano’s Hotel.
  • Mt Austin Primary School P&C Association flower show was held with principal Mr D G Phipps and school vice-captain Cheryl Chaney pictured in the Daily Advertiser admiring a Peace Rose grown by Mr Phipps.
  • Members of the Turvey Park Rugby Leagues Club Ladies Auxiliary held a farewell party for Mrs M Castle, wife of the captain coach Bruce Castle who is returning to New Zealand.
  • Michael Caine and Noel Coward are staring in The Italian Job at Hoyts theatre with John Wayne staring in True Grit at Hoyts Drive-In.
