25 Years Ago

  • The Member for Riverina, Noel Hicks, opened the 130th Annual Wagga Show, which this year features the Holden Bridgestone Precision Driving Team and an Emergency Services Spectacular.
  • Hundreds of eager job seekers queued for hours to apply for full-time positions with Hungry Jacks which is opening soon in Wagga.
  • Australia’s oldest bookmaker and prominent Wagga identity, Alf Ludwig, is offering a reward for the return of money and jewellery worth more than $12,000 stolen from his home.
  • Wagga body builder, Simon Shields, who trains at Flex-it gym is competing in the World Physique Federation Championships in Sydney.
  • TAFE student, Robyn Forde was named as Miss Wagga Showgirl 1995.
  • Kooringal High School Class of 1985 held a reunion at Romano’s Hotel.
  • More than 100 juniors from as far away as Wollongong and Melbourne are attending the New South Wales Cricket Association annual camp at the Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre.
  • Mrs Alvena Buik who ran the Lake Albert Post Office for nearly 25 years with her late husband, Alick Buik, has died aged 80.
  • Miss Wagga Quest entrant, Kylie Browning has published a book on the history of Wagga titled, A Brief Look at Wagga Wagga 1829-1995.
  • Wagga students, Richard Singleton and Stephen Lane have been awarded prestigious scholarships to the King’s School at Parramatta.
  • Wagga’s Emergency Services got together with the Carlton Clydesdales for a Baylis Street parade in preparation for the Wagga Show this week.
  • Wagga Business Machines in Forsyth Street is advertising a Daisy Wheel Electronic Typewriter for $195 and a Brother Laser Fax Machine for $1995.
  • Riverina Co-operative Society manager, Col Mercer, presented winner of the Co-op Henty Field Days competition, Helen Guttler, with her prize.
  • The Red Lion Hotel Beer Garden is featuring Wobbly Boot this Sunday.

50 Years Ago

  • Almost 1500 people packed the Civic Theatre over three sessions for a performance by members of the Australian Ballet Company.
  • Show Society Secretary, Mr Bill Lampe said that 39,000 attended the 1970 Wagga Show last week.
  • More than 240 ex-prisoners of war and their wives attended the Riverina Ex-POW Associations most successful reunion dinner ever at the Wagga Police-Citizens Boys Club.
  • A “Red Mass” was held at St Michaels Cathedral as a prelude to the Supreme Court sitting in Wagga.
  • Brian Lawrence and Norm McLennan were the only Wagga players reported to have shown reasonable form when Wagga Leagues Cricket Club lost possession of the Hoare Trophy when trounced by South Sydney Leagues Club.
  • Tenders have been called for major building projects at Wagga High School including a three-storey school accommodation block and assembly hall.
  • Bob Ashton has resigned as secretary of the Wagga Tennis Association after 22 years in the position.
  • Wagga Quota Club presented a cheque for $331, the proceeds of a recent bowling day to Sister M Imelda representing the Home of Compassion Building Fund.
  • Wagga dancers, Laurel Rowe and Helen O’Connor were joint winners of the Scottish Dancing Aggregate Trophy at the Wagga Eisteddfod. They will share the prize money and 15963will each hold the trophy for six months.
  • Knights Meats in Baylis Street, Gurwood Street and the Australian Arcade is advertising Corned Legs of Lamb for 35 cents a lb, Loin Chops, 85 cents per 3 lb and sides of Hogget and Heavy Lamb, 19 cents a lb.

  • Several weapons have been handed into Wagga Police Station with a state-wide arms amnesty now in place until 31st December.
  • Murrumbidgee Dairy announced that milk deliveries will be approximately one hour later during the summer months.
  • Twenty teams have entered the Business Houses Rugby League Competition at Staunton Oval organised by South Wagga Apex Club.
  • Woolworth’s are advertising Pecks Paste, 4½oz for 17 cents, Brylcreem large hair cream 47 cents and Weston’s Family Assorted Biscuits 1 lb for 19 cents.
