25 Years Ago

  • Brothers dream of a maiden Group Nine premiership became a reality, defying its critics to thrash Magpies 42-16 in the grand final at Eric Weissel Oval.
  • Father Wilf Plunkett who was appointed parish priest of Sacred Heart Kooringal in 1976, celebrated his 40th anniversary as a Catholic priest with an outdoor mass at the Sacred Heart Primary School.
  • A petition containing almost 8000 signatures protesting State Government plans to dismantle the regional office of the Department of School Education was presented to Mayor Pat Brassil to be passed on to the Premier Mr. Carr.
  • More than 50 old pedal cars, scooters, bikes, and trikes were on display at the Classic and Historic Automobiles Club’s inaugural Pedal Power Day at the Wagga Show Ground.
  • Wagga motorist, Mary Pyke, is celebrating 70 years of membership with the NRMA.
  • Daily Advertiser, racing writer, Graeme White, 28, was named NSW Racing Media Association rookie of the year at a Gala function in Sydney.

50 Years Ago

  • Principal of Wagga Agricultural College, Mr B Atkins, said he was pleased with the announcement that the college was to go co-ed with the admission of girls to begin next year.
  • Soccer referee, Jim Creed abandoned the grand final between Henwood Park and Talbingo after being jostled by several players.
  • Brother and sister, Garry and Julie Ann Staines competed in the recent Victorian Schoolboys and Schoolgirls tennis championships played in Melbourne.
  • Mr Maurice Kelly, a director of the Wagga Leagues Club and president of the Kangaroos Football Club has been appointed foreman of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce Security Service.
  • More than 1200 replies were received to a nation-wide survey conducted by Wagga City Council to determine what workforce was available to meet the needs of projected industrial development in Wagga.
  • Wagga City Council is seeking closer liaison with droving firms on problems resulting from livestock being driven along roads and streets.
  • Jock Hartwig is pictured with a $240 kangaroo skin rug he won in the recent Wagga Lions Club raffle to raise funds for Miss Australia contestant, Miss Karen Crawford.

  • Sprint champion, Our Lamy, trained by Kevin Oakman, became the first dog to break the 19 second barrier for 354 yards in a brilliant all-the-way win at North Wagga.
  • Consistent centreman Jim Absolum won the 1970 senior best and fairest award at East Wagga.
  • Alderman, W P Brennan described Wagga City Council’s policy on flat development in the city as “very dangerous”.
