25 Years Ago

  • About 80 World War II veterans war widows and people who served on the “home front” including Colin Knott, Bill Ellis Cedric Thomas and and Frank Metz were honoured guests at a Kapooka march-out parade.
  • Leagues Club President Brian Lawrence and Wagga City Bowling Club president, Bob Clarke signed contracts for the establishment of the Wagga City Leagues Bowling Club based at the Leagues Club.
  • Wagga Hertz Licensees, Ken and Pat Morden were recognised as being the countries number one licensees at a company conference held in Darwin.
  • Licensee of Romano’s Hotel, Peter Bolton assisted by John Lenehan from Waratahs and Andrew Robertson from Kangaroos drew the winning ticket for a trip to the World Cup in South Africa.
  • Noel Barber, well known for his support of junior rugby League has died.
  • Former Town Clerk and Wagga Golf Club president from 1952 to 1957, Bill Ellis is preparing for the Wagga Golf Club centenary celebrations coming up soon.
  • Twenty Wagga Jobs have been shed at Moore Paragon as part of a nationwide cost cutting operation.
  • Ian Graham, director of planning and development is pictured looking over council requirements for the proposed civic centre with Stephen Varady, Councillor Pat Brassil and General Manager, Brian Andrews.

  • More than 300 Rotarians will attend a Rotary Conference in Wagga this week where Henry Gardiner a member of the Kooringal Rotary Club will replace Ian Mackay of Orange as Rotary District Governor for District 9700.
  • Visitors Centre Manager, Roger Ansell is looking for local support for the inaugural Wagga Festival of the Voice.
  • The Norman Street store with a turnover of approximately $4,500 per week is available for sale for $37,000 plus stock.
  • Members of Shapes Squash Swim Fitness Centre have apparently been left in the cold after the centre closed its doors without warning.

50 Years Ago

  • The Commerce Permanent Building Society is opening its new $185,000 office building which has been built on the site once occupied by the Ritz Café on the corner of Baylis and Thompson Streets.
  • Two young Wagga men died in an early morning car smash on the Sturt Highway, one mile west of the Hume Highway intersection.
  • Sixty-one people have died on roads in the Riverina Police District his year, an increase of almost 100 per cent on the same period last year.
  • John Jenkins and Greg Corbin have been selected to play in the NSW Schoolboys hockey side to tour New Zealand later this season.
  • Twenty debutantes including Miss Dawn Ellis, partnered by Mr Graeme Wenzke were presented to Mr G Mackie MLA and Mrs Mackie at the Scottish Ball held at the Police Boys Club.
  • Dr Judy Begent who has been in Wagga with her husband, Dr C Childs for three years is featured in the Daily Advertiser’s “This is their job” column written by Nada Panic.
  • The Anglican Bishop of the Riverina, Rev J B Grindrod visited Wagga and spoke at St Johns Day services held at St John’s Anglican church.
  • Mr and Mrs Claude Evans celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary at a party given in their honour by Mr and Mrs Byron of Meadow Street.
  • The NSW Egg Marketing Board has purchased five acres of land to establish a new and larger premise along the Sturt Highway.
  • A 20-year-old RAAF mechanic from Forest Hill was fined $140 and disqualified from driving for 12 months after being caught driving his motorcycle at speeds of up to 90 mph on the Sturt Highway.
  • Member for Wagga, Wal Fife has announced that eighteen additional Housing Commission homes are to be constructed in Wagga.
  • Fulham Gardens are selling red pontiac potatoes for 52 cents per 14-pound bag and silver beet just for 10 cents a bunch.
  • Community Advancement Fund chairman, Peter Duff, announced that a month’s holiday in South Africa will be the prize for the winner of next year’s Miss Wagga Quest.
  • A honeymoon at Lord Howe Island followed the marriage of Miss Dianne Margaret Summergreene to Mr Gregory James Strong at St Johns Church of England this week.
  • Woolworth’s are selling P.M.U 15½oz cans of soup for 9 cents and Delicious Apples 10 for 30 cents.
