·         $7.7 million has been allocated in the NSW State budget for construction work on the Gobba bridge in the coming financial year.

·         Wagga City Council convened a meeting, chaired by Cr Mary Kidson, after it received an alarming report on the poor condition of Lake Albert.

·         Michael O’Reilly is the new owner of Petherbridge and Muir Pharmacy, purchasing the business from George Petherbridge who has operated the Pharmacy since 1978.

·          Regional geriatrician, Dr Peter Purches, announced the establishment of a Dementia Advice and Counselling Service saying up to 300 Wagga people suffer from Dementia.

·         Wagga has won an award for the highest participation rate for recycling in rural NSW.

·          Paul Gooden, Geoff McGilvray, Mark Hull and Michael Kennedy from Nationwide Realty McGilvray collected a number of awards from Nationwide’s Head Office in Sydney.

·         The NSW government has rejected a funding proposal for St Michael’s Regional High School which will also impact plans to re-open St Joseph’s Primary School.

·         Wagga Patrol intelligence officer, John Tritton, reported that 376 property offences were committed in the Wagga Police patrol area during August.

·         Conservationist, Andrew Read, said replacing and failing to maintain Wagga’s Hampden Bridge might backfire financially on the city council.

·         The NSW Cancer Council has received 21 applications for the position of a secretary-administrative officer to establish operations in Wagga.

·         Roger Gorrel has been appointed as new advertising manager for The Rural News.

 

50 Years Ago

·         Edmondson’s announce they are to construct a three storey $500,000 store in Gurwood Street which will include parking for 1000 vehicles.

·         Traffic lights have been erected at the pedestrian crossing on Hunter’s Hill in Fitzmaurice Street.

·          Well known Wagga woman, Mrs Edna Doris Ellis who was actively associated with the R.S.L. and scouting movements and mother of Town Clerk, Bill Ellis, has died.

·         Wagga Base Hospital Board Chairman, Mr L J Kennedy speaking at the hospital’s annual general meeting said that the hospital’s most immediate pressing need was for an increase in general section beds.

·         Judith Carpenter was presented with the Queen’s Badge by Mrs W L Hurd, Divisional Commissioner of the Girl Guides.

·         Neville Keen and Doug Walker were presented with Riverina Rugby Union best and fairest awards by Mr Don McKinnon from The Clef Electrical Store.

·         Mr Ray Davis and Miss Vivian Smyth were among 280 guests who attended the St Andrew’s Heather Pipe Band Springtime Ball at the Wagga Police Boy’s Club.

·         A public meeting chaired by the mayor, Ald R J Harris and sponsored by Wagga Rotary decided to form a Wagga branch of Birthright, a civilian counterpart of Legacy.

·          The Bobby Limb Show is performing with John Ansell’s Band at the RSL Club.

·         The midnight show at Hoyt’s Drive-in on Friday 13th features “Two Faces of Dr Jekyll” and “Monster of the Campus”.

·          Edmondson’s in Gurwood and Bourke Streets are advertising half gallon ice-cream for 55 cents and Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, 16oz, for 29 cents.
