25 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s Advance Bank is paying 8% pa on $20,000 term deposits for 14 months.
  • Regular Daily Advertiser letters correspondent Kevin J Baker advised that he had just completed a 6,700-kilometre round trip to Karumba with the Burke and Wills Roadhouse being the only place with petrol dearer than Wagga.
  • City Council general manager, Brian Andrews spent two hours outlining new council restructuring plans to more than 400 employees at the Civic Theatre.
  • Trinity Senior High School principal, Paul Rumble confirmed a massive facelift for the School worth almost $1 million.
  • Betty Blake, Margaret Skeers, Joyce McKee and Norma Richardson from Wagga Commercial defeated RAFC in the CRDWBA fours championship final played at the Wagga Women’s Bowling Club.
  • Peter Trevaskis retired from Gissing House at Wagga Base Hospital after 27 years of dedicated service to psychiatric care in Wagga.
  • More than 80 players converged on the Tolland Squash Centre for the 10th annual Vintage Tournament.
  • The Lions Club of South Wagga are hosting five Japanese exchange students visiting Wagga.
  • Leagues Club (3) team, Steve Rea, Steve Oakman, Dave Oakman, and Peter Raczkowski scored a thrilling 5-4 victory against Leagues Club (2) in the Wagga Billiards and Snooker grand final.
  • Wagga businessman, Neil LePage has been elected chairman of a newly formed Riverina Regional Tourism executive committee.
  • 90 Mt Austin High School students braved biting winds and drizzling rain to help plant 150 trees as their contribution to Angry Anderson’s tree planting challenge.
  • Cannons Supermarkets are selling Imperial Leather soap, four for $2.39, Leggo’s Pasta 375/500gm for $1.09 and Maggi Assorted Soup Packs for 49 cents each.

50 Years Ago

  • Local sporting identities including Arthur Summons, Arthur Dixon, Ken Buntain, Phil Smyth, Wal Blake, and John Jackson met at a luncheon meeting to discuss the possibility of forming a Riverina branch of the Australian Sportsmen’s Association.
  • Mr John Huthwaite was installed as president of South Wagga Apex Club following on from retiring president, Mr John Dinnell.
  • Scouts District Commissioner, Ian Bell presented a Queens Scout Badge to Ian Johnson and a Silver Duke of Edinburgh award to Graeme Cosier in a ceremony attended by member for Wagga, Wal Fife.
  • Wagga’s new social worker, Mrs Anne Gorman said that Wagga had “a good deal more” social problems than people cared to admit.
  • Copies of “A History of Wagga” by Keith Swan can be purchased from the Council Chambers or City Library for $4.50 and can be autographed by the author this Friday at the City Library.
  • Rev D Mackenzie-Baird of St Andrews Presbyterian Church returned home after a two-month world tour.
  • The 50th anniversary of Girl Guides was marked with Wagga’s Mayor, Ald R J Harris planting one of 16 trees planted by Brownies, Guides and Rangers on the reserve next to Lord Baden Powell Drive.
  • More than 400 primary school students are performing as a massed choir at the Plaza Theatre for Education Week.
  • Filipino nurse, Norma Velasco who is training at Wagga Base Hospital was guest of honour at the home of Mr and Mrs Bill Douglas to celebrate her 21st birthday.
  • Mrs Jean Stokes who won one gold, three silver and one bronze medal at the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games at Edinburgh was welcomed home to Wagga by the Mayor, Ald R J Harris with a Civic reception.
  • Wagga High School cadets are among more than 9,000 cadets from 77 NSW schools marching into camp at Singleton.
  • Chris Schmid won the A grade men’s championship and Prue McCullock the women’s A grade championship conducted by the Wagga Alpine Ski Club at Falls Creek.
  • Senior Scouts from the 6th Wagga Group sat out the weekend on top of a 30-foot tower to raise $100 towards funds for a new hall and facilities.
  • Trinity High School student, Andrew McClure won the Wagga final of the Junior Chamber of Commerce “Youth Speaks to Australia” contest.
  • Inspector H Smith of Wagga Police presented proceeds from the recent Police Golf Day to Mr W L Hurd representing the Society for the Welfare of Retarded Children and to Detective E Stubbs representing the Police Boys Club.
