25 Years Ago

  • The Riverina Hotel has reverted to its original name, the Bridge Tavern to mark the centenary of the official opening of the Hampden Bridge.
  • Fire damaged two classrooms used by special needs and kindergarten pupils at Tolland Public School.
  • Kendell airlines has reduced fares from Wagga to Sydney flying in new SAAB “340 airliners”.
  • Despite severe hail and strong winds causing damage to crops in the MIA, district agronomist, Steve Sutherland said there were no reports of hail or violent winds in the immediate Wagga area.
  • Gary Gurtner, proprietor of Barbeques Galore has issued a warning to other retailers after been robbed in broad daylight four times in a little over 12 months.
  • Wagga Joinery managing director, Phil Lyons is the latest member of the local building trade to restructure his business because of a lull in the industry.
  • Garth Crosswaite is pictured in the Daily Advertiser competing in a water polo match between Wagga Asthma and Romanos.
  • Miss Teen of America, Sonya Wang, 19, of California received a warm welcome at the local races from jockeys including Donald Terry, Graeme Power, Grant McCarthy, and Alan Abrahams.
  • Des and Connie Lane are pictured in the Daily Advertiser studying the form guide during the Murrumbidgee Turf Club meeting.
  • Norma Richardson was accorded a Mayoral Reception by Mayor Peter Dale prior to representing Australia in women’s bowls at the Pan Pacific Games in Dunedin, New Zealand.
  • Greg Howick at Lowry and Howick is a joint leasing agent for the new Wagga Marketplace retail complex expected to open late in 1996.
  • A total of fifty TAFE students including Raegen Woodbridge, Darren Rudd, Stephen Reid and Tracey Wild recently completed their HSC exams.

50 Years Ago

  • Deputy Mayor, Ald Morris Gissing, and President of the RSL Mr Harold Fife led Local Government and Armed Services leaders at a Remembrance Day ceremony at Wagga’s Cenotaph.
  • South Wagga Apex Club has offered to help the Wagga Beach Life Saving Club to continue life saver patrols at Wagga Beach.
  • A total of 137 drivers appeared in Wagga Petty Sessions on breathalyser charges in the first half of this year after the unit started operations on December 23 last year.
  • Member for Wagga, Wal Fife and Mrs Fife are pictured along with their daughters, Susan, 6, and Carolyn, 10, in the Daily Advertiser attending the Gumleigh Boys Home anniversary fete.
  • President of the Wagga Base Hospital Graduate Nurses Association, Mrs M Bance said that more than 100 graduate nurses from all parts of the Riverina had attended a very successful nurses seminar held in Wagga.

  • A torrential storm flooded many Wagga streets including the intersection of Morgan and Docker Streets.
  • Mr and Mrs Kevin Hughes and Mr and Mrs John Duncan were pictured at the “Dionas Ball” conducted by the Woodstock PLC Old Girl’s Association at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • An outstanding performance of 223 points by schoolboy Trevor Peterson highlighted competition in the Wagga Tenpin Bowling League.
  • 23-year-old, former South Australian Amateur League footballer, Robert Muecke has been elected President of Wagga Tigers Australian Rules Football Club.
