25 Years Ago

• Tamworth Starmaker quest winner Darren Coggan and the men behind the hit song You Don’t Call Wagga Wagga Wagga, Jim Haynes, Greg Champion and Ted Egan were guests of honour at a mayoral reception hosted by Mayor, Peter Dale.

• Business operators surrounding the Golden Square Carpark have urged Wagga City Council to acquire the privately owned sections of the carpark to put an end to disputes over vehicle access and parking.

• Marketing Agent, Peter Davies said work on the $7 million Waterview high rise development in Tarcutta Street will begin soon once approval is obtained from Wagga City Council.

• Professor David Battersby announced that a new course in Pharmacy will be offered at Charles Sturt University in Wagga from next year.

• Fruit and vegetable grower, Kevin Cox suffered almost $100,000 damage on his 48-acre property at Gumly after a freak hailstorm lasting 20 minutes.

• Riverina teachers endorsed continuing industrial action in a bid to achieve “salary justice”.

• Mayor Peter Dale said Wagga, Dubbo and Tamworth will work together to produce a video promoting balanced State development.

• Regina Roche has been unanimously elected as president of Wagga Women’s Hockey.

• Celebrating 25 years as a teacher, Sue Brown was presented with a framed certificate by assistant South Wagga Public School principal, Margaret Whalan.

• Fifty former employees of Paull’s Department Store founded in Baylis Street during the early 1930’s by Harvey Paull gathered at the Wagga Leagues Club.

• Leon Wadley has been appointed manager of National Australia Bank’s Wagga branch.

• The state Government is to sell its Johnston Street office block as part of a state-wide program of property disposal.

• Current Miss Wagga, Shannon Dunn urged local girls to “go for it” and enter the 1997 Miss Wagga Quest.

• Director of Community Services, John Craig said that Wagga City Council’s security patrol program had been well received by the general public.


50 Years Ago

• The annual Wagga Apex raft race was held at Lake Albert as part of a Lake Carnival organised by the club.

• Town Clerk, Mr Bill Ellis has appealed to residents to take a greater interest in next weeks by-election for the Wagga City Council than they did in 1968 when only 38.6% of the population voted.

• Civic leaders including Mayor, Ald Morris Gissing and his wife were given a sneak preview prior to the official opening of the Woolworths Family Centre store, this week.

• Mr and Mrs John Gray were married at St Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev Mackenzie Baird officiating.

• Footrot in sheep is presenting serious problems according to Wagga Pastures Protection Board veterinary inspector, Mr E P Buckley.

• Wagga travel agents, including Miss Josie Abbott from Hore and Davies Travel Centre were among guests at a dinner to celebrate the Qantas Jubilee anniversary.

• Graeme Clark has opened a new pharmacy in the new Woolworth’s Family Centre.

• Wagga and District Car Club held its presentation night at the Wagga Leagues Club.

• The Clef Retravision store in Baylis Street is clearing an AWA stereogram for $339 or $1.75 weekly and portable AWA TV’s from $189 or as little as $1.50 weekly.

• A group from Kurrajong School supervised by Mrs Amy Hurd, Mrs Mary Taylor, Miss Julie Shephard, and Mrs Shirley Oakman travelled to Camp Hudson, near Tumut for a weekend of activities.

• Woolworths new Family Centre is selling a Kodak Instamatic camera complete with film cartridge, battery, and flash cube for just $7.48 as well as an electric bar radiator heater for just $2.76.

• Wagga City Council’s Industrial Promotion Officer, Mr Joe MacManamon is hoping to enlist the assistance of citizens as “voluntary suggestion officers or promotion officers”.

• Mr W A Milne of Kincaid Street has grown New Guinea bean seeds which have produced bean pods more than three feet long.

• A group of Agricultural College Students volunteered their services with the landscaping of the Birralee Cottage Home for Children in Lusher Avenue.
