25 Years Ago

  • Wagga Police Association president, Tony Day, asked Wagga residents to support the campaign for a new Police Station by telling police how they have been let down by the antiquated and cramped conditions of the Sturt Street station.
  • Despite threats of an injunction Wagga and District Kart Racing president, Alan Anderson said Sunday’s opening of the Garden City Sprint Kart track in Tasman Road had been a resounding success.
  • The Wagga Squash Centre in Bardo Lane was severely damaged by fire.
  • Magistrate Andy O’Donaghoe. slammed a pre-sentence report recommending a non-custodial sentence for an assault by two youths on another youth at the Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre.
  • Movie star, Robin Williams was spotted recently enjoying a beer at the Victoria Hotel having deviated off the Hume Highway to visit the city.
  • Mission employment manager, Craig Couzens, said it was illogical that six people employed at Wagga’s Skillshare office are set to join the ranks of the unemployed after Federal Government funding cuts.
  • A crowd of 700 at Shepparton saw local dance couple Barry Sadlier and Josette Smith win the masters final and intermediate singles final at the Victorian Rock ‘n’ Roll championships.
  • Taxi owner, Brian Carr is upset by what he believes are plans by management to install computers in taxis to replace radios.

  • Voluntary Aid Detachment members, Marie Black and Gay Karas travelled to Sydney to accept awards for outstanding service to the community presented by the British Consul General, Philip Morrice.
  • The Murrumbidgee catchment was given a “fairly clean bill of health” in a report by the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority.
  • Executive Officer, Luke Grealy, said that Tourism Wagga Wagga had decided to promote upcoming local events on the internet.
  • Mellita Howard 13, was the Division 3 winner in the night tennis competition.
  • Wagga Motors joint managing director, Gordon Braid said following Council approval major extensions to Wagga Motors car showrooms in Dobney Avenue would begin shortly.

50 Years Ago

  • A special group of telephonists are now at the Wagga Telephone Exchange to help subscribers adjust to the new STD telephone dialling system.
  • A Sydney man appeared in Wagga Court charged with assisting a prisoner to escape from the Wagga Lock-up by passing him a hacksaw blade.
  • Matron Edna White who has been matron at Wagga Base Hospital for seventeen and a half years and who was awarded an MBE this week, has announced she plans to retire in September.
  • Secretary, Chris Raper, said that the Wagga Trades and Labour Council would open an office in the Golden Arcade which would initially be open on Saturday mornings.
  • A young man was fined $200 by Mr P F Smith S.M. in Wagga Court on two charges relating to the drug pethidine.
  • Miss Mary Millard, assistant manager of the Wagga Softball Association has been unanimously chosen as the Associations Member of the Year 1970-71.
  • Life membership was conferred by the Wagga Boat Club on Mr Ken Kenneally and Mr John Williams.
  • Kooringal Girl Guides, Raelene Childe and Sue Wallace are pictured in the Daily Advertiser shining the shoes of Rotary President, John Hepburn to earn money in their annual “Cents for Service” program.
  • The Wagga and District Car Club with President Eric Hawkins and Secretary, Baden Breust is to conduct a learn-to-drive campaign for senior high school students.
  • Prominent Wagga butcher, Bill Lonsdale said that butchers are holding a special meeting to discuss alleged anomalies in stock slaughtering practices at the Wagga Abattoir.
  • More than 300 employees of the ANZ Banking group from NSW and Victoria are attending the groups annual interstate sports in Wagga this long weekend.
  • Miss Cheryl Belling is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with her parents at her 21st birthday party.
  • Charlie Wealand, Geoff Hand, Jack Clarke, and Arthur French have been awarded life membership of the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Local member, Wal Fife announced that approval has been given for the allocation of a Housing Commission cottage for a key employee of Dunlop Garments.
