In April 1867 ninety Wagga residents signed a petition asking for a “proper post office” to be built at Wagga rather than just a telegraph office which was under consideration.
The petitioners also claimed that mail despatched from Sydney by 5pm was not being delivered in Wagga until 9am on the third day after leaving Sydney! It was suggested that sorting the mail at Gundagai rather than Tarcutta would reduce this time taken by 14 hours.
Subsequently by 1869 a new red brick Post Office with clock turret was erected in Fitzmaurice Street.
The original building was replaced by the one shown here in 1888.
