25 Years Ago

  • Brian Sheppard Place was dedicated in a ceremony at Charles Sturt University’s Wagga Campus to mark the contribution to the University by the late Brian Sheppard.
  • Acting Wagga police patrol commander, Inspector Neville Tarleton and the Wagga Community Consultative Committee are considering a plan to rid Wagga’s central business district of crime.
  • Wagga Labor party candidate at the March State election, Col McPherson predicted that voters would return to the polls within a year suggesting that sitting member Joe Schipp would retire before the end of his term.
  • CSU has awarded Keith Swan with an Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) in recognition of his long and valued contribution to the University and its predecessor institutions and particularly for his role in the establishment of the University Archives.
  • RSL was awarded the Allan Lawrence Shield following the Wagga and District Cricket Association first grade grand final at Robertson Oval.
  • The first cohort of 376 students graduated from CSU’s policing courses at Joyes Hall on the Wagga Campus.
  • Elizabeth Buchanan, Helen Abigail and Dulcie Corben are pictured with Meals on Wheels Project Officer, Robyn Skuse at the launch of a special report recommending improvements to the Meals on Wheels service in Wagga.
  • Wagga Swimming Club’s presentation night saw senior trophies awarded to Tracey Longmore, Bill Kaye, Ashley Tucker, Steven Clarke, Chermaine Perceval, Michelle Kelly, Tania Bookallil, Katheryn Clarke and Natalie Perceval.
  • A residential subdivision which could see the population of Uranquinty increase by 230 was approved by the Wagga City Council Development Control Unit.
  • Festival IGA in Bourke Street has legs of lamb for $3.79 kg and Tip Top Raisin Toast for $1.19 all with free delivery.
  • Kendell Airlines is taking over the Sydney route from Ansett Airlines with Ansett assuring their staff that they had no need to fear for their jobs.
  • Lee Purches who graduated with First Class Honours in the Bachelor of Social Work at CSU in Wagga was also awarded the prestigious University Medal.
  • Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp has announced that he will not be seeking a position on the Opposition Front Bench led by new Coalition leader, Peter Collins.
  • Red Tulip 50g Easter Eggs are just 88 cents each at Woolworths.

50 Years Ago

  • Minister for Local Government and Highways, Mr Morton is arranging discussions between the Department of Main Roads and Wagga City Council to determine a site for the replacement of the Hampden Bridge.
  • A mobile post office and special post markers depicting a vintage car are being provided in connection with the 10th International Rally for Veteran and Vintage Cars with 500 cars and bikes visiting Wagga this week.
  • A crowd of about 200 attended the St Michael’s Parish Picnic at the Borambola National Fitness Camp.
  • Turvey Park swimmer, Belinda Paul set a new record in the senior 50 metres breaststroke event at the Combined Primary Schools Swimming Championships at North Sydney.
  • $350, proceeds of a testimonial football match between Turvey Park and Wagga at Gissing Oval were presented to Robbie Nolan by Turvey Park Australian Rules president, Jim Egan.
  • A plague of mice is spreading throughout the Riverina causing damage estimated at thousands of dollars.
  • Nearly 60 Austin Healey Sprite sports cars, from Canberra, Sydney and Victoria, attended a day-long motorkhana at Kurrajong Picnic grounds.
  • South Wagga Bowling Club steward, Sid Fleming won a new Holden Torana, first prize in an art union organised by South Wagga Rotary Club.
  • Hardy’s Hardware is advertising oil-fuelled Vulcan Space Heaters.
  • Wagga Teachers College students called for a one-day strike by local trainee teachers.
  • Four shining new squash courts have been opened in Bardo Lane.
  • David Jones is advertising for an Assistant to the Accountant who is aged 19 to 23 and has an ambition to succeed. Knowledge of office procedure is also essential.
  • St Andrew’s thirty-third annual junior eisteddfod is underway at St Andrew’s Hall.
  • Bill Hasler with Ray and Fred Swansborough have caught a 70lb Murray Cod at a secretive location on the Murrumbidgee River.
