25 Years Ago

  • A Federal Government tax hike is expected to push fuel prices in Wagga over 80 cents per litre in Wagga this week.
  • Marcia Rumble has been recognised as a Champion Regional Fundraiser in the 1994 Grandparent of the Year Awards for her fundraising efforts for the NSW Arthritis Foundation.
  • Talented local athletes Scott Crozier, Trent Kelly, Melanie and Sonya Bradley have been selected to represent Wagga in the inaugural New South Wales Youth Games to be held in Sydney.
  • Former Riverina boxing champion, Reg Montgomery died at the Mary Potter Nursing Home aged 83 years.
  • Footballing legend, Arthur Summons has handed over to Bruce Piercy as general manager of the Wagga Leagues Club after 30 years in the position.
  • Graham Cross has resigned as general manager of 2WG and FM93 less than three weeks after orchestrating the launch of Wagga’s first commercial FM radio station.
  • Chris Schmidt, Council’s manager of economic development services said there was a possibility that Freight Rail’s proposed container terminal at Bomen could become an “inland port”.
  • Sheila Cuell, Mariana Nutt, Miles Monaghan, John and Val Donnelly and Jack and Helene Wilks were among those attending a Younghusband company reunion at the RSL Club.
  • John Wood and Carlo Donebus are host Lions for Daniella Sola and Serena Bonfanti, Italian exchange students in Wagga as part of a Lions Club International Youth Exchange.
  • Community Princess Jeannette Bailie and Miss Wagga, Sondra Kremerskothen leave Wagga this week for their overseas trip to Wagga’s sister city, Nordlingen in Germany.
  • Wagga and Narrandera have been declared drought-affected as the condition grips almost 60 per cent of NSW up from 45 per cent in July and just 10 per cent in January.
  •  Musicians and vocalists from Vianney College and friends held a family concert at the Kooringal Sacred Heart Centre.
  • Mrs Joy Surrey, president of the NSW Women’s Bowling Association joined members of the Riverina District Women’s Bowling Association holding their 40th Birthday celebrations at the Wagga RSL Club.
  • The new District Governor of Rotary District 9700, Ian Mackay, is visiting Wagga and wants to change the perception of Rotary to create a better community understanding of the work of Rotarians.
  • The Wagga RSL Sub-branch has donated $1,000 to the Wagga Base Hospital’s appeal raising funds for new equipment.

50 Years Ago

  • Three small schools in the Wagga District, Plahgoman, Westby and Wallaroobie will close when the school spring vacation starts later this month.
  • Wagga PMG Divisional Engineer, Mr H H Turner said that almost 50 cases of vandalism on telephone boxes had been reported to him in the past two weeks.
  • The Inspector in charge of Griffith Police, Inspector Herb Smith is succeeding Inspector W Hart as inspector in charge of the Wagga sub-district.
  • Wagga’s oldest bowler, Mr Frank Selff, 85 is pictured in the Daily Advertiser measuring his winning ball in this week’s tournament.
  • John Braid presented football jumpers to Mt Austin High School to be worn in the Carroll Cup Australian Rules Competition between Wagga’s High Schools beginning this year.
  • Huthwaite’s Food Fair is celebrating its twelfth birthday with special prices including Uncle Toby’s Oats 2lb for 33 cents and Betty Sydney cake mixes for just 18 cents.
  • 400 Students from Wagga schools are rehearsing together for the Festival of Combined Choirs to be held during Education Week.
  • Southern Riverina County Council Chief Electrical Engineer, Mr Herb Wilson, said street lighting in Baylis and Fitzmaurice Streets was being improved by the installation of mercury vapour lamps.
  • Mount Erin High School Students, Leslie Fitzpatrick and Diane Withers won first and second prizes in the Wagga CWA poster competition.
  • Collins and Hoye at 15 Kincaid Street have large steaming fowls for $1 each and Roasting Ducks for 42 cents lb. They open on Saturday until 11.30am and delivery is free.
  • Miss Helen Pollard and Mr Charles Merritt were among 300 people attending the Old Grammarians Ball at the Wagga Police Boys Club.
  • The Wagga Chamber of Commerce has sent a special message of congratulations to American astronauts Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin on the successful completion of their Apollo 11 mission.
