25 Years Ago

  • After 34 years at the top end of Baylis Street, Riverina Co-op general manager, Col Mercer has announced plans to move to a new $1.1 million building to be built in Moorong Street.
  • John Nolan and Pat McDonough retired from Southern Riverina Electricity and Water after almost 83 years’ service between them.
  • John Gray was re-elected unopposed for his second year as Wagga Commercial Club President with Bruce Beaver and Graham McCorquodale joining the Club Board as new directors.
  • Chamber of Commerce president, Daryl Maguire, was left “dumfounded and angry” by a disappointing response from retailers to the “Wagga on Sale” promotion planned by the Chamber.
  • 2WG General Manager, John Seaman who replaced former general manager Graeme Cross in August last year has resigned.
  • Rod Cockburn, proprietor of Rod’s Custom Rods is hoping to reopen very soon after the Hammond Avenue store was destroyed by fire this week.
  • Garry and Lisa Brown, David and Melissa Stratton and John Sheldrick were among those attending the Festival of Wagga committee’s Masquerade Ball at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
  • St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 125th Anniversary.

  • Former Treasurer Dave Edwards has been made a life member of the Wagga Junior Rugby League.

50 Years Ago

  • Lamson Industries Australia has announced plans to establish a 65,000 sq. ft. airconditioned plant which will employ up to 110 people on six acres of industrial land in Hammond Avenue.
  • The Licensing Reduction Board approved an application for a liquor licence submitted by Brian and Carmel Kennedy for a new hotel-motel at Tolland.
  • Commissioner for Railways, Mr Neil McCusker was welcomed to Wagga by deputy mayor, Morris Gissing, and Town Clerk Bill Ellis.
  • The Arthur Summons-2WG award for the best player in the M.R.L. was presented to Magpies and Country winger, Bruce Stewart.
  • Hore and Davies Travel Service is advertising a 52-day, round world tour for young ladies under the personal supervision of Miss Betty Archdale former headmistress of Abbotsleigh Girls College.
  • Members of the Wagga RSL Women’s Auxiliary, Mrs T Bridle, Mrs C Graham, Mrs H Fearne, Mrs M Cox and Mrs C Doyle are pictured in the Daily Advertiser preparing for this week’s Poppy Day.
