25 Years Ago

  • One of Wagga’s largest employers, Laminex Industries, is in the process of laying off between 45 and 50 employees as it prepares to open a new plant at Gympie.
  • Junee farmer, and NSW Liberal Party President, Bill Heffernan celebrated his pre-selection win for a Senate seat over a few quiet drinks with Prime Minister, John Howard.
  • Old Wagga Inn secretary, Donna Taylor won the 2WG Workforce on Tap Secretary Appreciation Day Competition.
  • Australian Jockey Club (AJC) stewards have been called in to investigate serious allegations raised in the Wagga District.
  • Placegetters in the Tolland Hotel’s 100-kilometre cycle race were Barry O’Hagan, John Bourke, and Brian Harding.
  • Wagga Heat superstar, Taj MacFarlane is pictured in the Daily Advertiser teaching Sturt Public School student, Mitchell Lucas, 5, some of the basics during a basketball clinic.
  • Community Radio, 2AAA-FM is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary.

50 Years Ago

  • World famous aviatrix, Mrs Nancy Bird Walton is visiting Wagga to accept a cheque for the NSW Air Ambulance from Quota International District Governor, Mrs Marjorie Hamill.
  • Two elderly Wagga men, Mr J Bowe and Mr J Salter are leaving on a pilgrimage to France where a memorial to their World War One comrades will be dedicated.
  • Wagga High won its way into the University Shield grand final with a 15-2 win over Endeavour High School.
  • More than 100 men from the newspaper industry including Mr J C Jackson, managing editor of the Daily Advertiser are attending a printer’s convention in Wagga.
  • Community Social worker, Mrs Anne Gorman, said that the establishment of a Senior Citizens Centre was one of Wagga’s greatest challenges.

  • Three Wagga waitresses Mrs Victoria Wilkinson, Mrs Dawn Weir and Mrs Norma Willis shared first prize of $12,000 in Ordinary Lottery No. 6501.
  • Mr G Roffey, a senior officer from the Repatriation Department will be visiting Wagga soon and appointments can be made with Wagga R.S.L.
