25 Years Ago

  • Member for Wagga Joe Schipp said funding for stage two of the Wagga Base hospital redevelopment was on track despite the failure of the government to include funding in its September budget.
  • Drought-stricken, Wagga district farmers celebrated their second decent rainfall in less than a week.
  • Renowned grazing property “Kilgowlah” offered for the first time in three generations of the Osborne family was passed in at auction having reached $400 per acre.
  • Dance instructor, Irene Schmidt said Wagga’s 50-50 Old Time Dance Group is short of male dance partners and would welcome local men to join the group.
  • Wagga women, Shirley Cheshire and Gwen Boatwright who have both been Breast Cancer Support Service Volunteers for over 15 years have been honoured with community service awards presented at Government House by the Governors wife, Mrs Shirley Sinclair.
  • Petrol prices have plummeted in Sydney to around 64.9 cents a litre while Wagga prices have been steadily rising to around 74.9 cents a litre.
  • Peter O’Brien, Director of Schools for the Wagga Catholic Diocese presented a certificate to Henschke Primary School principal, Michael Jones acknowledging the dedication and commitment of teaching staff at the school.
  • Chairman of the Wagga Business Enterprise Centre, Tom Watson, said plans for a technology park in Wagga were ahead of schedule following a $40,000 Federal Government grant for a feasibility study.
  • Kapooka’s old chapel is to be relocated by the Wagga and District Historical Society to Willan’s Hill where it can be used to set up an army display and an exhibition of Wagga City Council memorabilia.
  • Woolworth’s manager, Glenn Watts presented $4545.25 raised through sausage sizzles and a trolley push to Rod Parsons, chairman of the Wagga Base Hospital equipment enhancement appeal.
  • Sports journalist, at the Daily Advertiser, Ross Ingram was re-elected unopposed as president of the Riverina Australian Rules Club with Lance Seaman and Allan Gow both re-elected unopposed as vice-presidents.
  • Ann Brassil has been re-appointed to the Board of Governors of Charles Sturt University for a second four-year term.
  • A multi-million-dollar expansion at the Wagga TAFE campus will create places for an additional 1500 students.
  • Riverina Health Service Board Chairperson, Joy Ross and members of the board held a special function at the Schofield Centre to acknowledge the important efforts of religious chaplains at Wagga Base Hospital.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s telephone number will soon change to six digits and new equipment at the Wagga telephone exchange will allow Wagga subscribers to dial S.T.D. to Sydney, Melbourne and Albury.
  • South Wagga third grade cricket team captain, Loyal Matheson is pictured in the Daily Advertiser playing Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Recent heavy rains will cause nuisance flooding with the river at Wagga expected to peak at 20 feet six inches.
  • Wagga district’s milk and cream production had reached a seasonal peak said the Agricultural Department’s dairy officer, Mr J Chittick.
  • A new half-million-dollar library block is being built at the Wagga Teachers College by Wagga building contractors, Buckmans.
  • The Inter-Church Action group and Community Advancement Fund is sponsoring a community service directory to give details of voluntary organisations and other institutions in Wagga.
  • The Wagga Women’s Basketball Association farewelled their vice-president, Nita McGrath who is leaving Wagga shortly with her husband, John McGrath who is science master at Wagga High School.
  • John Lysaght Pty Ltd has donated roofing material for the seventh Wagga Scout Group Hall currently under construction using voluntary labour.
  • Mount Austin High School principal, Mr C S Oliver said that students face expulsion if their hairstyles fail to gain approval at special inspections.
  • Member for Wagga, Wal Fife said that ten new single brick veneer aged units will be available for in Wagga for occupation within six months.
  • Magpies’ centre Bruce Stewart received the best and fairest award from Wagga Leagues Club president, Arthur Dixon.
  • Miss Marion Curran and Miss Helen Pinnock were among the large crowd of 650 which attended a charity premiere performance of Oliver at Hoyts Theatre.
  • Wagga City Council approved in principle plans by a Myer subsidiary to construct a multi-storey department store and carpark off Baylis Street.
