25 Years Ago

  • Chief Inspector Kevin Wales told Wagga’s Community Consultative Committee that crime figures for February of 186 property offences were well down on January with 259 and December with 307.
  • Cr Jim Eldridge told Council that the city’s noxious weeds inspector should work harder rather than Council employing a second inspector.
  • The Wagga Catholic Diocese is standing firm despite threatened strike action by angry primary school teachers.
  • New South Wales Premier, John Fahey is among special guests at the Gumi Races this week said organiser, Reg Whitelaw.
  • Principal of Sacred Heart Primary School, Sue Middleton, said some parents were refusing to let their children travel on school buses because of bullying and overcrowding.
  • Wagga City Bowling Club faces an uncertain future following a special meeting held at the Club to consider future options.
  • Curator of Robertson Oval, Kevin Hosie, was formally recognised for his contribution to the AFL Foster’s Cup game between Sydney and Footscray.

50 Years Ago

  • Former Mayor, Mr Ivan Jack and Mrs Errolla Heard who both retired from Wagga City Council at the last election were presented with Local Government Service Certificates.
  • The Wagga Apex Club Lake Swim Carnival featured a Lake Swim and Raft race together with other carnival attractions.
  • Mr J S Macrae was elected president of the Wagga Show Society replacing Mr J H Henderson who has been president for the past four years.
  • President of the RSL Club Mr S C Sadlier said that the Club made record profit of more than $73,000 last year.
  • Mr Harold Fife has been re-elected president of the Wagga RSL sub-branch with vice-presidents Mr C Knott, Mr G Simpson and Mr R Coveny.
  • Wagga spin bowler, Tom Sumski and wicket keeper Col Stewart combined to dismiss three South Wagga Batsmen playing at Gissing Oval.
  • Long standing member of staff at David Jones, Miss Annette Clear was given a pre-wedding and staff farewell at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Mt Erin student, Margaret Simpson was the outstanding swimmer at the inter-high school carnival held at the Wagga Baths.
  • Sheep in the Wagga District are in excellent condition according to Sheep and Wool Livestock Officer, Mr A R Clark.
  • Mr Norm McLeod was elected as president of the local branch of the Birthright movement.
  • David Jones supermarket has six varieties of rice-a-riso for 22 cents a packet and Ipana fluoride toothpaste for 34 cents a tube.
