25 Years Ago

  • Don Burrows is playing this week in the grand ballroom at the Old Wagga Inn.
  • St John’s Anglican Parish is celebrating its 140th Anniversary and is launching a new history book jointly authored by Phyliss De Jersey, Dorothy Fellowes and Reverend Doctor Tom Frame.
  • The Red Lion Hotel first established in 1878 has reopened on its original site at 96 Edward Street.
  • Mark Childe has retired after 25 years’ service as regional media officer for the Department of Agriculture.
  • Ly and Graeme Smith are holding their third Greg Frawley exhibition at Riverina Galleries.
  • Television rural guru, Neil Innal was among speakers at a meeting attended by about 100 people which was hosted by Government officials to discuss exceptional circumstances and drought assistance.
  • PCYC area co-ordinator, Fred Loneragan said that the Wagga Police Citizens Youth Club is involved in a weeklong Operation Street Beat as part of a State-wide drive for funds.
  • Plans outlining a $24 million proposal in Baylis Street were submitted to Wagga City Council by Woolworths and are expected to go on public display next week.
  • The Mayor, Councillor Pat Brassil together with general manager Brian Andrews and director of energy services, Ray Beddoe will travel to the United States to study competition among providers of utilities such as gas and electricity.
  • President of the Wagga and District Historical Society, Henry Gardiner, launched a promotional brochure for the Wagga Historical Museum.
  • CSU deputy vice chancellor, Professor Richard Johnstone who is also the principal of CSU’s Wagga campus has been appointed as the new pro vice-chancellor at Sydney University.  
  • Gordon Braid, Chairman of the Riverina Driver Training Centre Committee said that their objective of establishing a $6 million driver training centre was at “the crossroads” after “a frustrating four-year trail through bureaucracy that had led virtually nowhere.”
  • Wagga police patrol commander, Inspector Neville Tarleton and Wagga’s Community Consultative Committee have drawn up an action plan to combat crime in the city’s central business district.
  • A crowd of almost 7000 saw 16-1 outsider Top Guy ridden by Melbourne jockey, Damien Oliver win this year’s Wagga Gold Cup.

50 Years Ago

  • Businessman Don Kendall has become the third man to nominate for Country Party endorsement for the new State seat of Sturt following Mr Tim Fischer and Mr Bob Fraser.
  • Australian Estates Co. are advertising excellent modern fibro houses priced from $11,000.
  • Consorting squad detectives led by Detective Sergeant Les Lundie swooped on the Wagga Gold Cup meeting at Wagga Racecourse and arrested two men later charged with stealing.
  • A crowd estimated at 5000 saw 25-1 outsider Super Gem nose out 5-2 favourite Grand Canyon to win this year’s Wagga Gold Cup.
  • Two sub-committees have been formed to bring Lake Albert under local control at a meeting convened by Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife.
  • Edmondson are selling 1500W Hecla heaters to “stay warm this winter” for $8.95.
  • Walton’s are selling “Kero” heaters with automatic lighting for $25.95.
  • One of the biggest crowds on record which included Miss Diane Sutherland ,Mr Lloyd Rynehart, Miss Maree Morgan and Mr Kerry Flynn, saw 36 debutantes presented to the Bishop of Wagga, the most Rev F P Carroll at the annual Wagga Catholic Ball held at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Sydney’s largest bookseller, Dymock’s has established a new Book and Stationery Department at Huthwaites.
  • Wagga Quota Club held its 12th Installation Dinner at Romano’s Hotel with special guests including the Mayor, Ald R J Harris and Mr Herb McPherson.
  • Wagga City Council has approved in principal development of a major sporting complex by the Riverina Australian Rules Club at the corner of Fernleigh and Glenfield Roads.
  • Wagga City Engineer, Mr Colin Knott said that the Department of Main Roads was likely to begin planning on replacement of the Hampden Bridge within three years.
  • Wagga City Council has directed architect, Mr F A Button to prepare plans for construction of the proposed crematorium at Wagga Cemetery.
