25 Years Ago

  • Cr Pat Brassil has been re-elected as Wagga’s Mayor for his fifth successive term with Deputy Mayor, Cr John Harding also retaining his position.
  • Three knife yielding thugs bailed up Alan and Maureen Crawford owners of the Garden City motel stealing about $500 in the third vicious area robbery in less than a week.
  • Show secretary, Bruce Mulqueeny said opening day of the 128th Wagga Show was one of the best ever.
  • Jenni Koetz, daughter of Downside farmers, Pat and Maxine Koetz was named Miss Wagga Showgirl amid pouring rain at the Wagga Show.
  • A hidden trap door discovered at the old Wagga Post Office revealed a secret room containing documents dating back to 1906.
  • The Central Wagga Apex Hole-In-One Competition is underway at Bolton Park with all money raised donated to Crisis Line.
  • Senior Constable, Peter Schonberg at Tarcutta has caught three brown snakes, averaging 1.5 to 1.8 metres in length, in three days.
  • House blocks are available from $47,000 to $57,000 in the new Graceland’s release now open at Kooringal.
  • On the eve of its 20th birthday the Riverina Australian Football Club has reported a 1992-93 profit of $102,740.
  • Warren Smith is co-ordinating a six-day Cricket Development Camp for Juniors at Borambola.
  • Geoff Burch, Dennis Blackett, Jim Eldridge and Ken McKenzie were among a majority of Councillors supporting a 12-month trial for an Alcohol-free zone in Baylis and Fitzmaurice Streets.
  • Cover price of the Daily Advertiser for Saturday issues has increased to 70 cents. Price of weekday issues remains at 60 cents.
  • Despite fuel excise and sales tax increases in the Federal budget the 50-cent shares in Finemore Holdings Limited have rocketed on Sydney and Melbourne Stock Exchanges to a record $1.66.

 

50 Years Ago

  • Department stores, David Jones, Huthwaite’s and Edmondson’s remained open for the Wagga Show but many others including hardware stores, Hardy’s and Castle’s closed for an afternoon “Show Holiday”.
  • The Wagga High School Cadet Corp band led the annual Wagga Show Day Lions Club parade down Fitzmaurice and Baylis Streets.
  • Sgt. L Lundie of the Riverina CIB said police had arrested and charged eight people during a routine check of side show employees at the Wagga Show.
  • Mrs A Hore was presented with a laurel wreath and citation recognising 50 years continuous service to the Red Cross by Red Cross president, Mrs D Lillie.
  • More than 250 businessmen attended a crime prevention workshop arranged by the Wagga Chamber of Commerce and the Police force.
  • President of the Calvary Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs T G L Flynn welcomed about 200 people to a garden party and smorgasbord luncheon which raised over $400.
  • Most of Wagga’s 300 teachers went on strike, attending a protest meeting at the Old RSL Hall.
  • Minister for Mines, Wal Fife officially opened the new Kooringal Shopping Centre.
  • Kangaroos defeated Magpies to become 1968 Murrumbidgee Rugby League premiers.
  • The sixth annual report and financial statements for RVN Riverina Television Limited showed advertising revenue continuing to increase despite adverse seasonal conditions.
  • There are 2650 entries for the 1968 Wagga Eisteddfod which is well in excess of those for 1967 despite fewer entries this year in the dancing section.
  • Wagga doctors claimed they had not been consulted over a plan to provide specialists for Wagga Base Hospital by linking it with St. Vincent’s hospital in Sydney.
