25 Years Ago

  • President of Kooringal Rotary Club, Graeme Burgmann, said he was totally disgusted by a vandal attack on the Rotary Peace monument only days after the honour roll in the nearby Victory Memorial Gardens was desecrated.
  • Communications pioneer, Douglas Harold Pitman whose Nagle Street business, “Pitman’s Communications” was established more than 50 years ago has died at the age of 81.
  • Popular clergyman, Father Wilf Plunkett marked his 40th anniversary as a Catholic priest at an outdoor mass held on the Sacred Heart Primary School Oval.
  • Riverina Broadcaster Holding s, owner of radio stations 2WG and FM93 has been purchased by Griffith based Broadcast Media Group.
  • Top artist and Australian of the Year, Arthur Boyd promised to gift one of his paintings to the Wagga City Art Gallery Foundation during a Civic Reception arranged by the Mayor, Pat Brassil.
  • A young Wagga man feared for his life as a masked bandit held a knife to his throat during a terrifying armed robbery at Wagga Cellars in Lake Albert Road.
  • A “Mark Allen Variegated” camelia grown by the Waldron family was named as champion bloom at the Quota Club’s Camelia Show held at the Masonic Hall.
  • Wagga City Council unanimously adopted a recommendation to award Freedom of the City of Wagga to former Mayor and long serving Councillor, Ron Harris.
  • President, Brian Lawrence announced that Wagga Leagues Club had a record operating profit of $711,505 in 1994-95.
  • More than 100 past and present members including foundation members, Brian Buckley, Jim Saunders, Mark Conyers and Mario Gregorovic, attended the 10th anniversary celebrations for the Wagga Road Runners.
  • The historic steam locomotive 3801 travelled from Cootamundra to Wagga with a train commemorating the hundreds of troop trains which operated throughout NSW in the 1940’s.
  • Norma Richardson and Joyce McKee from the Wagga Commercial Club have won the NSW Women’s Bowling Association pairs championship for the third time.
  • Gerald Pieper plays his 350th game for the Wagga Tigers this week against Temora at Ganmain.
  • Damasa Pty Ltd has lodged an application with Wagga City Council to build a multi-theatre movie centre on the old PayLess Supabarn site in Trail Street.
  • Former Downside resident, Professor Bob Meyenn has been appointed acting deputy vice-chancellor of Charles Sturt University and principal of the Universities Wagga campus.
  • Dave Palmer Airconditioning is opening this week at 180 Hammond Avenue.
  • Wagga branch of the Abbeyfield Society announced that Wagga Architect, Noel Thompson has been appointed to draw up plans for a new Abbeyfield house to provide supported accommodation for older people on a limited income.

50 Years Ago

  • Hotel beer prices increased to 33 cents for a 20 oz glass, 25 cents for a 15 oz glass and 19 cents for a 10 oz glass.
  • Tooth and Company announced plans for a major development costing about $500,000 fronting Lake Albert Road at the rear of the Murrumbidgee Dairy Company.
  • Leagues Club President, Mr Arthur Dixon announced a record net profit of more than $93,000 for the 1969-70 year.
  • Wagga’s beach and caravan park were flooded by a swollen Murrumbidgee River.
  • Kangaroo’s beat Turvey Park 13-5 in the first M.R.L. semi-final held at Weissel Oval.
  •  A Wagga family of eight was left homeless when fire razed their weatherboard home in Moorong Street.
  • President Henry Henderson said that Wagga Legacy Club caters for 681 widows and 381 children of ex-servicemen and is hoping for a successful badge day this week.
  • Member for Wagga and former president of the Wagga Jaycees, Wal Fife, was presented with life membership of Jaycees by Hume Zone President, Mr A. Rossiter.
  • Huthwaites has demolished two more cottages in Peter Street and will soon have space for 170 cars in their car park.
  • Thieves took $1400 in cigarettes and razor blades when they broke into Coles store in Fitzmaurice Street.
  • The Head of Blue Masonic Lodges in NSW attended the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Wagga Lodge Loyalty Number 358.
  • The Wagga Regional Council for Children’s Films and Television provided films for a Children’s Film Festival held at Hoyts Theatre.
  • Huthwaites had a 17.2% fall in net profit to $121,699 in 1970.
