25 Years Ago

• Joe Schipp celebrated 20 years as the local member for Wagga Wagga with a dinner at the Old Wagga Inn attended by 250 civic and community leaders including leader of the State Opposition, Peter Collins.

• Charles Sturt University students face the prospect of not receiving their exam results until the new year because of a breakdown in enterprise bargaining between academic staff and CSU management.

• Assistant Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Reverend Richard Randerson, blessed the four new bells installed at St John’s Anglican Church while standing in a cherry picker raised to the height of the bell tower.

• Manager, Mike Nicholson said that McEwans’ new Wagga store now open in Pearson Street, was bigger and better than the old store in Forsyth Street.

• Wagga police spoke to two eight-year-old boys in relation to a fire at the Holy Trinity Primary School and a break-in at Ashmont Primary School.

• Thirteen-year-old Josephine Flynn was named “Entertainer of the Year” at Maureen Flower’s School of Entertainment.

• Hazelton’s Mega-value Holiday get-together fares are now on sale at $59 per person for a one-way flight between Wagga and Sydney.

• Bookings are open for the Don Hillam Christmas Show at the Old Wagga Inn.

• Simon McManus, a car air-conditioning technician at Thomas Bros outclassed 246 other NSW technicians to win a “Toyota air skills contest” in Sydney.

• John Barnes, General Manager of Riverina Wool Combing announced the closure of one of the plants three production centres with a loss of 52 jobs.

• Mike Cotterill and Catherine Peters were among those attending a candlelight service at the Botanic Gardens Tree Chapel in recognition of World Aids Day.

• Riverina Galleries is hosting a “Classic Pro Hart” exhibition.

• First Kooringal Guides, conducted by Nicole Clarke, 12, sang Christmas carols for residents of the Caloola Court Nursing Home.

• Wagga golfer, John Brayne won the RAAF Annual Open Shield at Forest hill.

• Taxi driver, Heather Riach has retired after 18 years driving cabs on the night shift.


50 Years Ago

• Mr H J Rex, chief executive officer at Wagga Base Hospital said more than 3000 people attended this week’s annual fete with 180 hams and turkeys won on the Lions Club chocolate wheels.

• Jim Little is playing this Saturday night at the Leagues Club with Col Joye and The Joye Boys featured at the RSL Club on Sunday afternoon.

• District Employment Officer, Mr R L Condon said that there were insufficient positions in Wagga shops and offices for Wagga’s female work force.

• Senior Scout Leader, Neil Skeers, presented a Queens Scout badge to Paul Rhodes during 21st Anniversary celebrations for the Fourth Wagga Scout Troop in Sunshine Avenue.

• The Wagga RSL Sub-Branch has donated a further $7,500 to the Haven Nursing Home Building fund bringing their total donations to $22,000.

• City Golf Club Professional, Wayne Hale, is selling famous name golf shoes for ladies and gents from $6 a pair.

• Mr Wal Sheather of Downside was the zone winner in a wheat competition organised by the Wagga Show Society.

• Coles New World Supermarkets are selling Tom Piper Camp Pie in a 12 oz can for 18 cents, plain or self-raising flour 2 lb for 17 cents and Pal dog food in a 14¼ oz can for 17 cents.

• Secretary of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce, Mr Ron Castle confirmed that all Wagga retail stores would close for four days over Christmas this year.

• The Road Safety Council of NSW, driver training centre in Wagga is providing behind-the-wheel instruction to licensing standard for $3.50 per hour.

• More than 100 people attended the Mayors annual Christmas party for officers and staff held at the Wagga City Golf Club.

• Quota Club members, Mrs Betty Hutchins and Miss Rhonda Bell are pictured in the Daily Advertiser preparing prizes for the club’s Pick-a-Box at their stall to be held this week on Fossey’s corner.

• Riverina Machinery have been appointed as Toyota distributors and have sold their first Toyota car to Mr and Mrs C Shanks of Wagga.

• Patersons are selling 5 cubic feet Hitachi refrigerators for $119 or 95 cents per week.
