25 Years Ago

  • Local media and sporting representatives including Peter McAlister, Scott Levi, Dave Gibson, Corey Bocking, Peter Mahoney, and Chris Suckling promoted Operation Drinksafe at the Riverina Australian Rules Football Club.
  • Tidy Town Awards were presented at the Council Chambers to local winners by Mayor Peter Dale and Tidy Towns Chairman, Bob Gnezdiloff.
  • Well local known identity, Cyril Silverstone, known within council circles as the “ratepayers’ friend” and founder of the Silvalite service station at Ashmont has died at the age of 85.
  • Agent Lynn Webb from The Professionals said a crowd of more than 70 at an auction at 55 Trail Street indicated good interest in the real estate market.
  • After months of debate Council voted narrowly, 8 votes to 7 to appoint a social planner.
  • CSU’s Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies, David Battersby said that a collaboration with the Canadian based Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences was an “opportunity to continue to internationalise our programs”.
  • Civic Theatre manager, Ken Chappelow and art gallery director, Judy Le Lievre lost their jobs in a major overall of Council’s Department of Recreation and Cultural Services.
  • Wagga City Council reversed an earlier decision to refuse an application by the Wagga Apostolic Church for a staged development in Kooringal Road.
  • Clerk of the rally course, Kevin Roben, defended the use of Willans Hill for the Ray White Car Rally which is now in its 19th year, the last four of which have been using Willans Hill.
  • Council agreed in principle to install a glass mural to be made by Warren Langley at the Wagga Airport terminal resolving to meet the entire cost of $22,000 if nobody else is prepared to “chip in”.
  • Woolworths’s has acquired 11 Cannons supermarkets in the ACT and NSW including stores in Gurwood Street and at Kooringal but has refused to confirm rumours of an impending name change.
  • Osborne Computers terminated 130 employees Australia wide, including three in Wagga, with notice being provided by email.

50 Years Ago

  • A water sports carnival including sailing was contested by students of Wagga and Griffith High Schools on Lake Albert.
  • Airlines of NSW is blaming a fall-off in traffic demand for a decision to withdraw Fokker Fellowship F28 jet services from Wagga, Dubbo, and Broken Hill.
  • Mrs Anne Gorman, Wagga’s Community Social Worker said that since the establishment of the Community Aid Centre it has become evident that the problem of the aged is the biggest single challenge facing the community.
  • Member for Wagga, Mr W Fife addressed a large crowd at the opening dedication ceremony for the Birralee Cottage Home for Children in Lusher Avenue.
  • Miss Maria Hart is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Mr John Egan at her coming-of-age party held recently at Breffni, Junee Reefs.
  • Edmondson’s Easter Fair is featuring baby bargains including nappies for 58 cents each or $6.75 a dozen, Paton’s Baby Wool for 33 cents a ball and Bunnykins crockery from 85 cents each.
  • The RAAF is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a parade at Forest Hill, addressed by Officer Commanding Air Commodore G E Prosser and a formal evening dinner, for men only, at the Officers Mess.
  • One of Wagga’s best-known doctors, Dr R M G Holmes, who arrived in the city in 1934, has died.
  • Wagga Fruit Centre next to Woolworth’s Family Centre in Baylis Street is selling large lettuce for 16 cents, apples 25 for 48 cents, tomatoes, 2lb for 28 cents and grapes, black or white for 14 cents per lb.
  • Twenty-four members of the Turvey Park Methodist Youth Fellowship including, Liz Reid, are attempting to break the record for a non-stop 24-hour scooter ride.
  • Woolworths are selling PMU spaghetti or baked beans in 1 lb tins for 8 cents, Vegemite 4 oz jars for 18 cents, Fresh-Pak frankfurts, 1lb packets for 30 cents and Presto smoked salami 1 lb for 73 cents.
  • More than 200 people attended a dinner-dance organised by the South Wagga Lions Club for the Little Peoples Association of Australia.
  • Librarians and library assistants from many areas of the Riverina attended a seminar at the Wagga Teachers College.
