25 Years Ago

  • Acting director of the Riverina Institute of TAFE, Rosemary Campbell, has been permanently appointed to the position, replacing former director, Barry Pedal who has moved to Wollongong.
  • Greg Brown, Steve Atkinson, Peter Anderson, Chris Fry, John Dixon, and Maria Bright have joined the Chamber of Commerce board for the first time following a ballot of members.
  • A 20-year-old Wagga woman who sold heroin to an undercover police officer on five separate occasions has appealed against the severity of a six-month gaol term imposed on her in Wagga local court.
  • On the eve of celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary, Wagga RSL club chief executive Michael Mercer has announced plans for internal refurbishments and alterations worth $1.5 million.
  • Katie Madden, 23 has returned home after attending the recent World Youth Day celebrations in Europe with 1.2 million young Catholics.
  • Prominent Wagga and district identity Ruth Eileen Griffiths died eight months short of her 100th birthday.
  • Kooringal Tigers defeated Twin City Hornets (Albury) 34 to 24 in the Kennedy Shield Grand Final at Harris Park.
  • Club President, John Gray, confirmed that the secretary-manager of the Wagga Commercial Club, Ian Dacey, had resigned after more than nine years in the position.
  • Milton Wilson, from the Riverina Woodworkers Club, was among those displaying their talents at the Craftalive Fair at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Saint Michaels Regional High School student, James Stormon, 15, has won the prestigious Di Maginness trophy for the second year in a row.
  • The Royal Blind Society presented a certificate of appreciation to the Daily Advertiser editor, Michael McCormack to mark the Wagga talking newspaper’s fifth birthday.
  • At 78 years of age, Jean Bateman is celebrating 50 years as a member and devoted supporter of the Magpies rugby league club.
  • Wagga Golf Club retained the Rose Bowl trophy in the annual representative matchplay series against Wagga Country Golf Club.
  • English and music teacher at Mount Austin High School, Robyn King has retired after 32 years as a teacher.

50 Years Ago

  • Eric Weissel, probably the best country Rugby League player of all time, died suddenly in Wagga, aged 69.
  • Miss Wagga candidates for next year were introduced by the Community Advancement Fund at a gala welcome home function for Miss Wagga 1972, Deidre Kendall, at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • In the second stoppage within a month at Wagga’s Bomen Abattoir, 80 men on the mutton chain are on strike.
  • Hundreds of sheep, particularly those off-shears died during the week as a result of heavy rain followed by cold southerly winds.
  • The record price for a bullock at a weekly cattle market at Wagga was broken twice this week.
  • Mary Jane Hodgson, 13, has been selected to attend a week-long Australian Girl Guide Patrol Leaders camp to be held in Perth.
  • The Wagga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church has voted against union with the Methodist and Congregational churches.
  • Discontinued colours of Villawool, knitting wool are priced to clear for 25 cents a ball at Edmondsons.
  • Mrs Ellen Simpson was joined by Mrs Heather Marks, superintendent of The Haven as she cut her 90th birthday cake.

  • More than 200 people attended Edmondson’s fashion parade of spring and summer gear held on the third floor of their store in Gurwood Street.
  • Edmondson’s is selling Nescafe Instant Coffee 6oz jar for 95 cents, Harris Tea for 55 cents per lb and Peck’s Paste, 2oz for 22 cents.
