25 Years Ago

  • Scott Rapmund and Maree Westblade members of the 6th Wagga Venturer unit were presented with their scouting’s highest honour, the Queens’ Scout Award.
  • The price of unleaded petrol in Wagga has increased to 77.9 cents per litre.
  • Well known Wagga businessman and sporting identity, Brian Lawrence, has become the fourth president of the Wagga Leagues Club in its 38-year history.
  • Wagga Bidgee Canoe Club will take over the Wagga bathing beach kiosk and change room areas for the club’s activities.
  • Wagga based Finemore’s holdings has taken over Adelong company C J Dean bringing the number of prime movers in Finemore’s fleet to about 500.
  • Country Road’s Wagga store has closed.
  • Vice-chairman, Kay Hull said that Tourism Wagga Wagga was considering a proposal to disband its existing sub-committees and adopt a 14-member board of management following changes resulting from the new Local Government Act.
  • A Riverina Regional Talent Squad for netball was launched in Wagga.
  • Wagga police apprehended two juveniles who allegedly absconded from the Juvenile Justice Centre last week.
  • The third stage of Wagga’s Lutheran Primary School was opened at a ceremony attended by Member for Riverina, Noel Hicks and president of the NSW district of the Lutheran Church of Australia, Pastor Lionel Otto.
  • Wagga City Council is considering how best to deal with abandoned supermarket trolleys.
  • Wagga Show Society is planning an upgrade of Kyeamba Smith Hall which could see it take on the role of a convention centre in the city.
  • Wagga City Council is seeking to speed up funding announced recently for the rehabilitation of the Sturt Highway through the city.
  • The Wagga Wagga and District Historical Society have asked Council to help find $75,000 for a new building as it is having to reject some additional items due to lack of space.

50 Years Ago

  • The Sydney Symphony Orchestra played at Hoyts Theatre this week.
  • Ambulance younger set president presented two new pulse meters to Murrumbidgee Ambulance Board Chairman, Mr. M. Gissing and Superintendent. Mr L Rees.
  • Wagga Swimming Club president, Mr R. Tickle and Mayor Ald R. J. Harris are pictured in the Daily Advertiser with P. Michael, R. Read and G. Tickle some of the prize winners at the Club’s annual presentation night.
  • Mr Reg Kelly, manager of David Jones presented racing commentator Ted Ryder with a black and white Timex Watch for use during his broadcasts of next week’s Wagga Cup meeting including the Black and White Whisky Town Plate.
  • Dr Judith Begent will be the first woman guest speaker at the Riverina Women Graduates Association meeting this week.
  • Wagga nurse Miss Cheryl Baikie of the Gregadoo Rural Youth Club has been named Miss Rural Youth of the Riverina.
  • World famous billiards and snooker player, Horace Lindrum played an exhibition match at the Commercial Club.
  • St John’s Church of England celebrated its 110th Anniversary with a special Holy Communion service followed by a breakfast in the Church Hall.
  • The first Australian car to cross the finish line in the London to Sydney marathon car rally is a Ford Falcon G.T., now on display at Hillis Ford in Fitzmaurice Street.
  • The NSW Housing Commission has approved the building of ten units for elderly single people in Coolibah Street.
  • Mr D. Swan, Area Director of Education officially opened the Tulloch Memorial Hostel in Coleman Street.
  • Max Belling Realty is selling a main street fish and chip shop with walk in freeze room and comfortable two bedroom flat for $6,000 W.I.W.O. plus $35 weekly rent.
  • Cheryl McCaffrey, Jenny Seaman, Ann Pigdon, Lesley Fitzpatrick and Vickie Irvine, pupils of Mrs J. M. Gorman won the folk singing section of St. Andrews Eisteddfod.
  • Col. C. H. A. East, Commanding Officer at Kapooka Army Camp presented a cheque for $600 to Mr. Ray Wood, president of the Riverina Council for the Gumleigh Boys Home.
  • Miss Jo Lodge celebrated her eighteenth birthday with Mr. Allan Hogan at the Town House Motel.
