25 Years Ago

  • Council decided on an eight-week halt to normal development processes for large subdivisions in the Lake Albert Catchment while it reviews water quality in the area.
  • Wagga City Councillors rescinded an earlier motion to approve a Councillors fee rise from $8,000 to $10,000 per annum.
  • Wagga Mayor, Peter Dale farewelled Miss Wagga Shannon Dunn and Community Princess, Ardene Firth as they leave on their six-week tour of Europe, Great Britain, and Ireland.
  • Two long serving Wagga teachers, Alison Schmidt at Henschke Primary and Barbara Stroud at Kooringal High School with 73 teaching ears between them have retired.
  • Mike Murray became the 67th president of Wagga Rotary taking over from Hany Hanna at the Clubs annual Changeover dinner.
  • Rosina Grosse is seeking an injunction from the Equal Opportunities and Human Rights Commission to halt any building work on the Woolworths Wagga Marketplace which would prevent the installation of a lift for disabled access.
  • Wagga solicitor, Ian Donald has retired from Walsh and Blair after 21 years to begin a new role as a professional mediator.
  • Rotary District Governor, Henry Gardiner installed Bob Wheeler as incoming president of Wagga Sunrise Rotary following on from Jan French.
  • Wagga City Council has placed a $20 annual parent administration fee on families who use the Wagga Family Day Care Centre in Johnston Street.
  • At Wollundry Rotary Michael Knight handed over the symbols of office to incoming president, Peter Davies.
  • Bredin’s Newsagency in the Sturt Mall took out first prize in a nationwide competition run by National Newsagent trade magazine.
  • David Galloway, 16 is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with his parents Paul and Judy following his selection in the NSW Country schools Rugby Union first XV side.
  • Outgoing president of Wagga Lions Club, John Phillips welcomed incoming president Vic Grosse at the Club’s 27th annual changeover dinner.
  • Frank and Belle Ingram celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

50 Years Ago

  • Concern was expressed by the Kooringal School Parents and Citizens Association about the safety of children resulting from traffic congestion outside the school caused by parents picking up children.
  • Almost 600 people packed Kyeamba Smith Hall for a “Daddy Cool” concert.
  • Following the annual meeting of the Wagga and District Trades and Labour Council Mr A Ducker is continuing as president and Mr C Raper as secretary. Other office bearers are Mr G Amos and Mr N Piper as vice presidents and Mr K Fletcher as publicity officer.
  • P E Power is advertising to graziers its wool transportation services to Sydney, Goulburn, Wodonga, and Melbourne.
  • The annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal is being held this week.
  • The “Crown Corner” cafe on the corner of Fitzmaurice and Kincaid Streets has received a complete face-lift with interior renovations and extensions.
  • One hundred landholders attended a meeting called by Mitchell Shire Council to protest recent land valuation increases in the shire.
  • Wagga Court was told that a man charged with intent to murder another man had said to police: “The only thing I’m sorry about is that I missed him”.
  • Official guests at this weeks passing out parade at Kapooka included Col R Dunne, the United States Military Attache in Australia and Wagga’s Mayor, Ald M Gissing, and Mrs Gissing.
  • Richard (Arthur) Webb has retired after 30 years as chief engineer at Calvary Hospital and will be succeeded in the position by his son Robert Webb with another son Kevin also working at the hospital as a fitter and turner.
  • The Carousel Coffee Shop at the Wagga Bowling Centre is advertising a hot counter lunch which includes coffee, tea, or soup for 65 cents.
  • Sydney barrister and State Liberal Parliamentarian, Mr J A Cameron was guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Wagga Wagga Women’s Branch of the Liberal Party.
  • Ald R J Harris has returned to Wagga after a six-week European trade mission.
  • Retiring president, Mr M Hale handed over to incoming president, Mr Owen Sykes at the Wagga Rotary changeover dinner.
  • More than 400 entries were received in the Wagga Junior Pigeon Club’s bird show.
  • Bill Morgan landed a hole-in-one on the seventh hole at the Wagga Country Club.
