25 Years Ago

  • Co-coordinator, Pam Petherbridge said that the Golden Gown Awards is starting a two-week tour of China this week at the Shanghai Fashion Expo.
  • Wagga City Council is preparing to shift to temporary premises in Hammond Avenue for the next two years while their new civic centre is constructed.
  • Wagga’s two State Bank branches celebrated the official launch of their new name, Colonial State Bank.
  • Mayor, Peter Dale hosted a civic reception for former winners of the Daily Advertiser– 2WG City to Lake run prior to this year’s 25th event.
  • Broadcast Media, owner of 12 regional radio stations including Wagga’s 2WG has been taken over by a British group, the Daily Mail and General Trust Pic.
  • Wagga Bidgee Canoe Club member, Michael Bailey won gold at the Victorian Canoeing championship held on the Yarra River in Melbourne.
  • President, Shirley Lindner, secretary, Peg Rodham, vice-president May Bruce and treasurer Eileen Phipps are pictured in the Daily Advertiser attending the 12th birthday party of the Wagga Probus Club.
  • Wendy James a member of the Girls Brigade in Wagga was presented with her Queen’s Award badge by Mrs Pamela Goodhew, wife of the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney.
  • At the Wagga Women’s Hockey Association presentation dinner, Regina Roach was awarded life membership and Becky Bradford won the Olive Whinney member of the year award.
  • Experienced spinner and weaver, Margaret Belling displayed her skills at the Aurora Clydesdale stud open day.
  • Wagga Social Slimmers have made 44 toy care bears which were presented to Camp Quality southern NSW director, Alan Lean by club member, Edith Pickford.
  • Kangaroo’s front rower, Nathan Wood was announced as the first grade best at fairest at the club’s presentation night held at the Leagues Club.
  • Wagga discus thrower, Nathan Carroll, 14 is pictured in the Daily Advertiser, with medals he won at the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges track and field championships.
  • Former Wagga and District Bowling Association and RAFC Bowling Club president, Bill Woodbury, and his wife Raylene have moved to Wollongong.
  • Debbie Howard won the Wagga Netball Associations, A grade best and fairest award.

50 Years Ago

  • The Wagga City Council election was declared with Aldermen, Smith, Condon, Loch, Fife, Frisby, Harris, Summons, Gissing, Heard, Allen, Gorman and Brooks forming the new Council.
  • Alderman Morris Gissing was re-elected Mayor of Wagga for his second term with Alderman Harold Fife elected as deputy mayor.
  • Escalators are being installed at Edmondson’s Department store by the Ottis Elevator Company and Buckman Building Group.
  • John Mercer and Bruce Grimmond from South Wagga Lions Club presented a $300 Tanderra chair to the Loreto Home of Compassion.
  • The Freedom from Hunger doorknock campaign raised $2962.
  • Jim Stenmark won the 1971 Wagga City Golf Club’s championship finishing one shot ahead of Les Jerrick and two shots ahead of Eric Beck.
  • A second parking officer, Special Constable W Stokes has been appointed for duties in the northern end of the business area with Special Constable J McQuillen now patrolling the southern end.
  • David Byfield holds a handy lead of 158 points at the end of the eighth series of matches in the All-Star League of the Wagga Tenpin Bowling winter competition.
  • A bright pink remodelled Holden Monaro 350 GTS car will be displayed on the Wagga Motors and B G Hartwig stands at the Wagga Show.
  • The Tulloch Memorial Presbyterian Boy’s Hostel in Coleman Street will become co-educational next year.
  • The Wagga Boat Club held its annual Ball with several hundred people attending.
  • David Taylor (under 16’s), Jeff Siebels (under 14 Swans) and Peter Taylor (under 14 Bulldogs) were best and fairest trophy winners at the Turvey Park juniors’ presentation night.
  • The Wagga Post Office has begun to distribute more than 10,000 Blue Guide business directories to all business and household addresses in Wagga.
  • Coles Variety store is selling girls summer tops for $1, girls’ frocks for 75 cents and ladies’ acrylic pullovers for $1.99.
  • Jimmy Sharman and his boxing troupe have arrived for their annual visit to the Wagga Show following their thrill packed program at the Melbourne Show.
  • A new $33,000 cottage home has been built for older boarders at Kurrajong School.
