25 Years Ago

  • Barbara Parker and Cynthia Marshallsea retired from Woolworth’s after 22 and 29 years, respectively.
  • The Holy See has awarded governance of Mt Erin High school to the Presentation Sisters following a two-year battle between the order and Bishop William Brennan over the management of the school.
  • Councillor, Mary Kidson was elected as Chairman of the New South Wales Public Libraries Association.
  • Councillors, Joe Mason-Cox, Ron Harris, and Ken McKenzie have announced their intention not to renominate for the Council elections due in September.
  • The Haven Chief Executive Officer, Ken Howell and State Manager of the Department of Human Services and Health, David Kelaher are pictured in the Daily Advertiser inspecting a new kitchen which forms part of new self-care facilities at the Haven.
  • Nauma Mortimer who served for nearly 10 years as matron at Wagga Base Hospital before resigning to marry Wagga solicitor Charles Mortimer died one week before her 97th birthday.
  • Kincaid Street residents are opposing a development application by Dallow’s reception centre to establish a pool hall on their premises.
  • Wagga cyclist Josh Collingwood won a world title in the junior road time trial in Ravenna, Italy.

  • Wagga City Council rejected a works committee recommendation to construct a cul-de-sac in Broad Street at its intersection with Travers Street.
  • Wagga Airport’s control tower faces possible closure as the Civil Aviation Authority moves to conduct a review of the service.
  • The Edmund Rice Centre was opened by Bishop William Brennan at St Michaels Regional High School on land purchased from the former Wagga City Bowling Club.

  • The newly formed girls’ soccer team, the Wagga United Ponytails, with coach Don Hudson is the only junior female soccer team in Wagga.

  • Five male students have resigned, and another has been suspended from the Wagga Teachers College following an investigation into marijuana smoking by the C.I.B. Drug squad.
  • Prominent Wagga pathologist, Dr Bryant Rudkin Frisby, aged 49, husband of Wagga City Council Alderman, Mrs Helen Frisby died after an illness lasting several months.
  • Two Wagga men aged 21 and 18 were sentenced to six years and four years gaol for an armed robbery at Mrs Moiler’s shop in Edward Street.
  • Kangaroos president, Mr Maurice Kelly presented the latest Miss Rugby League contestant, Miss Sue Dowd, with her $10 prize.
  • Some Meadow Street residents have threatened to destroy trees planted by council on nature strips in front of their homes.
  • Discussions are being held between the Department of Main Roads and Wagga City Council to determine an alternative site for a bridge to replace the Hampden Bridge.

  • Mr and Mrs R L Revell celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the home of Mr Lyle Revell.
  • Huthwaites in Baylis Street and at the Kooringal Mall are selling Sun-wise fruit loaf for 21 cents, Heinz baked beans or spaghetti, 16 oz for 12 cents and Edgell peeled tomato’s 15oz for 18 cents.
