25 Years Ago

  • Dr Farmey Joseph who operated a medical practice in Wagga for more than 40 years died on his 71st birthday at his Bourke Street home.
  • Executive Director of the International Division at Charles Sturt University, John Harding, is joining a contingent from NSW universities travelling to the Middle East.
  • Reported cases of domestic violence have soared with 45 cases reported in January, 30 cases in February and 44 cases in March 1996.
  • A corporate restructure of the Coles-Myer retailing group has resulted in the loss of one managerial position in Wagga and three in Albury.
  • Historic “Foxborough Hall” in Hardy Avenue was sold to a local professional couple after being passed in at auction three weeks ago at $395,000.
  • June Sutherland has launched a book called “From Farm Boys to PhD.” To mark 100 years of teaching at what began as the Wagga Experiment Farm and its various changes to become Charles Sturt University.
  • Keith and Barbara Baker who have lived in Wagga for 39 years celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss with a family gathering.
  • Bill and Nancye Hamilton also celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary with Bill’s only sister travelling from Canada to help them celebrate.

  • Ancient history students, Rebecca Lawson, Alisha Crane, Emma Sargent, and Claire Lawrence have been conducting an archaeological dig on Willans Hill at what was once the site of the Copland family home, “Hillside”.

  • Central Wagga Apex donated six bikes to the Police and Community Youth Club for use at its bike training facility.
  • Tony Quinlivan presented the Quinlivan Memorial trophy to Lisa Bryce, 13, Wagga Asthma Swimming Club sportsperson of the year.
  • Les Allen is retiring from “Humble Allen Power” after more than 30 years in the stock and station industry.
  • The Ashmont Baptist Peace Memorial Church is celebrating its silver jubilee.
  • About 100 people attended the launch of a community consultation process aimed at improving waste management.
  • Jewell Country Fresh in Bourke Street is selling bananas for 99 cents per kg, red delicious or Granny Smith apples for $2.99 for a 3 kg bag and chicken roll for $4.39 per kg.

  • The directors of television stations RVN-2 and AMV-4 have approved a proposed merger between the two companies.
  • Mr D B Davis has been appointed general manager of the Hardy group of companies.
  • The Wagga Chamber of Commerce has sold its security service to the present foreman of the service, Mr Maurice Kelly.
  • The Mayor, Ald Morris Gissing said that he was very satisfied with the production of a Decentralisation submission prepared by council’s officers.
  • The Horticultural Society of Wagga is holding a chrysanthemum flower show at the Methodist Hall, Turvey Park.
  • Wagga’s 10-day Wool Festival begins this week.
  • Wagga Women’s Bowling Club held a bowls day in aid of the Spastic Council with President Miss E Edyvean presenting trophies to Mrs D Twyerould, Mrs M Sheales, Miss V Hars and Mrs I Russell.
  • Manager of Dunlop’s Garments Division factory in Wagga, Mr David Maurer said that a recent staff recruiting campaign had bought an outstanding response.
  • Mr George Watson retired after 25 years’ service with the Southern Riverina Council.
  • Wagga High School won the combined Wagga High School’s athletics carnival at Weissel Oval.
  • Egg production has increased with the Egg Marketing Board in Wagga now handling about 4000 dozen eggs a day.
  • District Agronomist, Mr H A Woodward, said that substantial follow up rains were needed to allow suitable cereal sowing conditions.
  • The Wagga Group of the Australian Association for Better Hearing has gained the Associations award for the largest increase in membership over the past year.
  • The New Gas Centre in Baylis Street has extended a special $20 off town gas space heaters.
