25 Years Ago

  • Wagga police continued their crackdown on graffiti crime with the arrest of two Wagga men and two Wagga juveniles.
  • Landscaping of an 8064 square metre park to feature a formal park, tennis courts and a playground facing Gunn Drive and Schooner Place has begun at Estella.
  • Tom Watson, a senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University has been awarded life membership of the Lecturers’ Association of NSW.
  • Michelle Swan and her family won $50,000 in the grand final of Australia’s Funniest Home Video Show.
  • New South Wales Liberal Party President, Bill Heffernan called for a merger of conservative political parties to represent “non-Labor Australia”.
  • Wagga Artist, Cynthia Smith is pictured in the “Daily Advertiser” with her three-dimensional platter entitled “Cup of Tea” at an exhibition arranged by the Creative People of the Riverina group.
  • Host club champion, Cole Levy was the provisional winner before being disqualified for a technical rule infringement at the annual RAAF Open Shield final round golf at Forest Hill.
  • Wagga Tidy Town Awards were presented by Mayor Pat Brassil and Southern Riverina County Council general manager John Goldsworthy with Mr McPherson of McCullough Drive awarded for best overall garden.
  • Plans have been unveiled for a $13 million upgrade of the Sturt Mall to include construction of a Franklin’s Big Fresh supermarket and under cover parking.
  • Michael Hornby, Wagga manager of the Smith Family is leaving Wagga to take up a role as Queensland manager of the Smith Family in Brisbane.
  • Wagga Gymnast, Richard Peverell was named in the MLC Top 200 at a special presentation at the Australian Institute of Sport.
  • Grace Bros Wagga manager, Adrian Le Loux who took over from Glenn Bruce in February has resigned from the company.
  • Marie Sommerville, Joan Day and Nancye White were among those attending a Christmas luncheon for ex-prisoners of war held at the Commercial Club.
  • Seventy military parachutists are in Wagga this week for the Australian Defence Force Parachute Association Championships.

50 Years Ago

  • More than 100 people attended an Industrial Development Symposium organised by South Wagga Apex Club at the Leagues Club.
  • Local Wagga firm, Bells Soft Drinks has been taken over by Cottees General Foods.
  • Following a report by Weeds Inspector Mr K G Pither, Kyeamba Shire Council will prosecute several landholders who have failed to take reasonable measures to eradicate Paterson’s Curse.
  • Twenty-two nurses from Wagga Base Hospital who have graduated, following their exams, received their certificate and badge at a ceremony held at the Police Boys Club followed in the evening by their graduation ball.
  • Ian Duff is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Diane Armstrong at his 21st birthday party held at the Commercial Club.
  • Kooringal Public School Parents and Citizens Association, Treasurer, Jim Laing, said that this year’s Fete had raised $1476.
  • A new wheat storage is under construction adjacent to the rail siding at Forest Hill.
  • Mr J T A Gibson has been appointed manager of the Bank of NSW replacing Mr J E Wilson who has been transferred to Camden.
  • Major improvements valued at $5.5 million are announced for Wagga RAAF Base.
  • A Wagga man was fined $50 for negligent driving after colliding with and uprooting an electric light pole.
  • Young canoeists, Arthur Paterson and Glen Coventry are pictured on Lake Albert in the Daily Advertiser.
  • Mr John Eddy who was previously secretary-manager of the Forbes Bowling Club is taking over from Lindsay Carr as secretary of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
  • Wagga City Council will spend $9,000 improving the Wollundry Lagoon and landscaping in the vicinity of the Civic Theatre.
