25 Years Ago

  • Users of Lake Albert may be warned about the risk of infection after a report to Council identified that the lake sometimes fails standards set by the Health and Medical Research Council.
  • Miss Australia, Jayne Bargwanna from Young was special guest of the Wagga Harness Racing Club at its Pacers Cup meeting.
  • Senseless vandalism of St Ninian’s Presbyterian Church at Gumly has both shocked and angered the close-knit community said long term resident and caretaker Martha Lamprey.
  • Wayne Carroll, spokesman for the Wagga Trainers Association said delays in upgrading the training tracks at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club “has gone beyond a joke” and that current facilities are “disgraceful”.
  • Group Nine Referees Association held a successful seminar at the Wagga Leagues Club in conjunction with Group Nine coaches.
  • Rebecca Sutton from Trinity Senior High School was selected for the South Wagga Lions Club Youth of the Year Award.
  • Sharon Brodie, a spokeswoman for Forest Hill residents said steps were being taken to improve the current weekly Fearne’s bus service to the suburb.
  • Editor of the Daily Advertiser, Michael McCormack said a $2000 scholarship to be awarded to a CSU student would be the 11th successive year that such a scholarship had been awarded by the newspaper.
  • Wagga City Council has found that almost half of Wagga’s backyard pools surveyed do not comply with safety standards for gates.
  • Wagga Vet, Tony Edwards addressed members of the Riverina group of the Agricultural Society Council about drug testing of horses at shows.
  • Council has approved opening of Austwide Homes a transportable home building complex whose principals are well-known Wagga builders, Phil Andrea and Mick Neason.
  • Miss Teen America, Carla McPherson is in Wagga for the annual Festival of Wagga celebrations.
  • Two wooden portable classrooms from the 1940’s on the lower quadrangle at Wagga High School will be first to go in a two stage $4 million redevelopment starting soon.

50 Years Ago

  • Town Clerk Mr W R Ellis displayed a poster designed by local commercial artist, Mr Ron Redgrave which will promote the centenary of local government in Wagga to be celebrated in 1970.
  • Sheekey’s soft drinks has widened its range and now boasts 19 different flavour varieties and four different sized bottles.
  • Southern Riverina County Council’s Water Supply Engineer, Mr F C Baker said that one of two new production bores designed to augment Wagga’s water supply had shown good flows of water.
  • Bands at Bevel’s Restaurant will be asked by Wagga City Council to tone down their noise.
  • A heated debate saw Wagga City Council split over a $9.84 General Fund claim by the Mayor, Ald R J Harris for refreshments at two separate functions.
  • The first vice-president of Rotary International, Mr William C Carter, from England is visiting Wagga.
  • Swimming champions at Gurwood Street Public School are Ian Forrest, senior boys, Jennie Harper, senior girls, Daryl Harper, junior boys and Joanne Ness, junior girls.
  • Mr and Mrs L G Kirk and Mr of Urana Street and Mr and Mrs R Richardson of Marns Street are all celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries.
  • Seventeen years old, Peter Malcolm was the most outstanding swimmer at the Wagga High School annual swimming carnival.
  • A new ultra-modern motel in Thompson Street which will include a swimming pool is nearing completion.
