25 Years Ago

  • Senior Constable John Hay of the Wagga highway patrol was presented with the Commissioners Valour Medal by Police Commissioner Tony Lauer at a ceremony held at the Sydney Opera House.
  • Tara Muntz from Trinity Senior High School has been announced as the winner of the Lions Club Youth of the Year award. Other finalists included Jamie Way of Wagga Christian College, Mathew Irvine of Kooringal High School and Nat Williamson of Mount Austin High School.
  • Waiting time for elective surgery at Wagga Base Hospital has fallen from 120 days to 50 days between November 1993 and 1994.
  • Albury obstetrician, Dr Scott Giltrap, is a director of a company planning to develop a day surgery centre in Edward Street Wagga as an alternative to Wagga’s two hospitals for day-only procedures.
  • San Isadore residents protesting plans for a group home for troubled youth waved placards and burst into spontaneous applause during an emotion-charged Wagga City Council Committee meeting.
  • Margie Jones has been appointed as an asthma educator with the Wagga and district division of general practice.
  • Sylvia and Les Sewell from Lake Albert are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

  • Wagga City Council director of engineering and technical services, Gary Wells has called an urgent meeting to discuss widespread concern over traffic problems at the intersection of Fitzmaurice Street and the new Wiradjuri bridge.
  • Eight life members of Wagga Rodeo Club were guests of honour at a dinner at the Red Steer Hotel-Motel to celebrate Wagga’s 50th Anniversary Rodeo to be held this week.
  • The $5 million redevelopment of Wagga Technology High School began officially with Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp turning the first sod with the school principal, Joe Allan.
  • Gary Northey has started as Wagga’s new CES manager after the position had been vacant for seven months.

50 Years Ago

  • Mr Mark Childe has replaced Mr Bill Hill as the publicity officer for the southern region of the Department of Agriculture.
  • Ken Duff from South Wagga Rotary Club said that each of Wagga’s three Rotary Clubs would sponsor two Wagga youth leaders to attend a weeklong leadership course in Canberra.
  • Miss Diane Everson has taken up duties as the NSW State Government Information Officer located at the government offices building in Johnson Street.
  • Wagga Leagues Club Boxing Promotion Committee has donated $1000 to the Police Citizens Boys’ Club.
  • The North Queensland District Bowling Club received an official reception from Deputy Mayor, Ald M Gissing before taking a tour of the area.
  • Edmondsons are advertising a complete No2 Fowlers Vacola bottling outfit including electric thermostat, steel steriliser and 24 vacuum self-sealing bottles for $70.70 or 56 cents weekly.
  • Kooringal P and C is investigating the possible construction of a swimming pool at the school.
  • Wagga City Council refused permission for the Country Anti-Conscription Association to hold a lunch hour meeting at the Victory Memorial Gardens but approved an alternative site in the Civic Centre Gardens.
  • Following suggestions of its relocation to Albury, Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife has announced that Wagga Base Hospital’s TB Clinic, Gissing House, will remain at Wagga Base Hospital.
  • The Community Advancement Fund of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce has donated $2240 to the Kurrajong School for Retarded Children.
  • Wagga’s “Town House” has undergone a $45,000 facelift and will now be known as “Noah’s Town House Motor Inn”. Each room now has a TV, radio, taped music and a refrigerator.
  • Estate agent, Mr Max Belling confirmed that “Tom the Cheap” an Australia wide grocery retailer had purchased a site in Fitzmaurice Street previously occupied by the Grand Hotel which was demolished several years ago.
  • Wagga City Golf Club will enter two teams in the Wagga Darts competition after a break of four years.
  • Mr Rex Wagner has taken over from Mr Wallace Rhodes as officer in charge of the Soil Conservation Research Station near Wagga.
