25 Years Ago

  • After seven years at Wagga Technology High School, popular principal, Joe Allan will be moving next year to Grantham High School in Sydney.
  • Town planner, Garry Salvestro said detailed plans for Wagga’s multi-million-dollar main street upgrade will go on display this week.
  • Six-digit telephone numbers in the 069 area code will be replaced by a new eight-digit number system from this week.
  • Wagga City Council’s traffic manager, Garry Gaffney said that traffic on Wagga’s Wiradjuri bridge has been almost halved since the opening of the Gobbagumbalin bridge in July.
  • Former Wagga City Rugby players, Peter Dale, Neil McMullen, John Brunskill, John Dinnell, Ken Osmond, and Ogilvy McPherson are pictured in the Daily Advertiser attending the Boiled Lolly Benefit Ball at Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • A three-month trial of a 50km/hour speed limit will be held in Wagga from October 1st.
  • The cost of implementing a revised bikeway plan for Wagga has been estimated at more than $2 million with Councillor Jim Eldridge proposing a user-pay system for improving bicycle paths.
  • The “Sizzler” building in Hammond Avenue has been sold to a syndicate of well-known local businessmen, Robert Hartwig, Daryl Kelly, and Don Harper for close to $1 million.
  • Wagga Base Hospital’s director of clinical services, Paul Curtis, said that a record 1500 patients were admitted to the hospital in July, up between 200 and 300 from previous years.
  • Veteran’s Day took place at Wagga Women’s Bowling Club, with two bowlers receiving a bar to their badge for being 90 years of age and another 27 receiving badges for being 80 years of age.

  • South Wagga Apex is sponsoring Wagga teenager, Tara Muntz as one of 300 delegates to attend a youth forum at Old Parliament House.
  • Mount Erin High School teacher, Mavis Lupton is among educators from throughout Australia being considered for a 1997 National Excellence in Teaching award.
  • Knights Blinds and Curtains managing director, Bob Knight said that their company was on the verge of signing a lucrative licensing agreement for the manufacture and marketing of its “Rotal security louvre system” in south-east Asia.

50 Years Ago

  • Mr Henry John (Harry) Chaston, who retired as city engineer in 1947 after playing a big part in the establishment of Forest Hill Air Force Station, Kapooka Military Camp and the Teachers Training College died in Sydney at the age of 85.
  • A mass meeting of district farmers was held at the Wagga Leagues Club to discuss the future of the Wagga sale yards.
  • Charles Houen, South Apex’s incoming president, received the club charter from outgoing president, Wal Fawcett at the club’s changeover dinner held at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Mrs Pat Clark, Mrs Anne Warren, and Mrs Judy Norman were elected to the Interim Committee of the Wagga branch of the Women’s Electoral Lobby group, which held its first meeting this week.
  • Wagga Leagues Club president, Mr A E Dixon said that the Club had made a net profit of more than $80,000 last financial and that the year’s total turnover of $1,100,000 was the highest since the club was formed in 1955.
  • Ford Racing driver, Alan Moffatt was among those attending the official opening of Hillis Ford in Hammond Avenue this week.
  • Michelle Alberni, 13, who trains with Madam Busse won two major ballet championships recently at the Leeton Eisteddfod.
  • Three brothers-in-law, Tom Tsoukalas, Michael Sarantis and Nick Theoulakis, proprietors of Wagga Seafoods, have almost completed a $15,000 project combining self-service grocery and confectionary lines with fish and chips in one store.
  • Chris Gallagher, Diane Angel, Lindsay Bowden, Garry Gaffney, and Christine Howick were among those attending the Wagga High School ex-students “Blue and White ball” at the Police Boys Club.
  • Four men have been arrested and charged in Wagga with theft from poker machines by manipulation.
  • Ronald Corbett, formerly from the Gap, was ordained to the priesthood in Saint Michaels Cathedral by Bishop of Wagga Dr F P Carroll.
  • Mr Wilson Fitzgerald has been appointed general manager of T Edmondson and Co Ltd, Succeeding Mr H A Francis, who was recently appointed to another Burns Philp store in Geelong.
  • A total of 18 plays presented by groups from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and district centres, will take part in this year’s Wagga Drama Festival at the Civic Theatre.
  • Bill Beatty scored a hole-in-one on the 162-yard 7th hole at the Wagga Country Club.
  • New Zealand sensational TV and recording star, Dinah Lee appeared at the Wagga Commercial Club this week.
