25 Years Ago

·         Finemore Holdings Limited announced a 34 % increase in after tax operating profit to $3.503 million for the 12 months to June 1993.

·         Noel Stair, Officer in Charge of the Wagga Bureau of Meteorology said the past two months were unusually warm for winter.

·         Wagga Technology High School student, Brendan Diessel was awarded an Esso medal in the UNSW Australian Schools Science Competition, having the equal highest mark of any year 8 student in the state.

·         Muriel and Jim Waddell planted a tree in Wagga’s Botanic Gardens to mark a Day of Action Against Sexual Violence.

·         Latest figures indicate that 19% of eight to ten-year-old children in Wagga suffer from some form of asthma up from 11% ten years ago.

·         The licensee of North Wagga’s Palm and Pawn Hotel has lodged a development application with Wagga Council for nine-hole golf course opposite the pub in Hampden Avenue.

·         Spokesperson for the Wagga Access Taskforce, Louise Pledger, said while some improvements have been made there is still a long way to go in improving access for the disabled in many Wagga buildings.

50 Years Ago

·         In a unanimous vote Wagga City Council decided to ask the State Planning Authority to rezone North Wagga and give residents the right to rebuild.

·         Wagga Legacy which is now helping over 600 widows and 400 children is hoping to raise $30,000 from its annual appeal.

·         Mr Patrick Edward Power (Sen), the man who founded the Riverina’s largest carrying business died at his home aged 94.

·         More than 200 farmers attended a pig management school at the Wagga Agricultural College the biggest of its type in the area for at least 10 years

·         Mr and Mrs R L Brunskill left Wagga as part of a study tour of the American and Canadian dairy industries.

·         Wagga District Dairy Officer, Mr J B Chittick said milk and cream production at district dairy factories continued to increase through August 1968.

·         Chief Librarian, Miss M G Marsh said that more than 400 books are believed to have been stolen from the Wagga City Library in the last three years.

·         Wagga couple, Mr and Mrs James Olsen were among the large crowd attending the Wagga Stock Agents and Buyers Ball.

·         Murrumbidgee Turf Club treasurer, Mr Phil Ellerman received a cheque for $30,171 from Mr Neville Roy, Regional Supervisor of the TAB.

·         Wagga Golf Club has withdrawn its application to Wagga City Council to convert part of the North Wagga Flats to a golf course.

·         Wollongong cyclist, P Dawson riding off an 18-minute handicap won the Wagga District League Cycling Club’s annual 50-mile road race.
