25 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s Mayor, Peter Dale said that a solid tripartite alliance had been formed between Wagga, Tamworth, and Dubbo to co-operate on regional development.
  • Appalled by a recent spate of dog attacks, Councillor, Chris Miller has called for the tightening of dog control laws.
  • Prominent citizen, Alice Margaret Ann Hardy, widow of the late Charles Hardy has died at the Wendy Hucker Nursing Home at the age of 96.
  • Mayor, Peter Dale and general manager, Brian Andrews dressed in their ceremonial finest for the first official visit to Wagga by Tim Fisher as Deputy Prime Minister.
  • A crowd of more than 7000 saw Nobellotto win the 119th Wagga Gold Cup.
  • Bill Tipping is celebrating 25 years operating the photo finish camera on top of the grandstand at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
  • An application to develop a brothel in Edward Street was knocked back by Wagga City Council on grounds including that its location was not appropriate in a residential area.
  • Tommy Emmanuel visited Wagga as part of his “Classical Gas” tour.
  • About twelve St John’s parishioners are taking lessons in the ancient art of bell ringing under guidance from Ron Sheppard who rings at St Andrews Cathedral in Sydney.
  • Mt Erin High School Year 8 aerobic team members Susie Douglas, Megan Boynton, Corrie Buchanan, Amanda Jaques and Kate Woodgate took part in the National Heart Foundation’s “Heart Beat Aerobics Challenge”.
  • Continuing their winning way at the recent Wagga Dancesport titles Tim Koschel and Nicole Pyne, both 16, are pictured in the Daily Advertiser with sponsor Ian Begg from Wagga Tyreworld.
  • Wagga Pro-Am winner, David Snelling is pictured in the Daily Advertiser displaying his trophy with Wagga Golf Club President, David Byfield, and chairman of Energy South Bruce Rodley.
  • Peter Casser, Doug Osborne, Cheryl Osborne, and Ross Dawson were all successful shooters at the Wagga Field and Game’s Bridge Tavern Handicap.
  • Duffy Bros Fruit and Veg in Blake Street are selling bananas for 69 cents a kg, whole pumpkin for 10 cents a kg and large pineapples for 99 cents each.

50 Years Ago

  • Bishop Francis Carroll, accompanied by Mayor, Morris Gissing led 1000 young Christian Students from St Michael’s cathedral to a rally in the Victory Memorial Gardens which centred around the theme of road safety.
  • At the Legacy change-over dinner held at St John’s Parish Hall, incoming president of Wagga Legacy, Mr C S Oliver was presented with a president’s gong by outgoing president Mr J H L Henderson.
  • Wagga City Council gave approval in principle to major extensions and additions to Huthwaites store including an ultimate retail development in Peter Street behind the present store.
  • Wagga Apex Club has formed a steering committee to investigate the re-establishment of a sheltered workshop following the now disbanded Waratah House Committee.
  • Jim Harmon, Alderman Arthur French and former Mayor, Ivan Jack were made life governors of the Police and Citizens Boys Clubs of NSW in recognition of there many years of service.
  • Sergeant Pat Kain who was instrumental in the development of the Wagga Police Boys Club has been forced to retire from the force because of ill health.
  • Huthwaites are advertising Betta Slippers for Mother’s Day for just $4.50.
  • John Hepburn and Derek McNamara from South Wagga Rotary presented Wagga Base Hospital Chairman, Mr L J Kennedy with a donation towards equipping the Coronary Care Unit at the hospital.
  • The training section of the catering staff at Forest Hill RAAF Base have made a 50-pound cake to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Air Force.
  • Mrs P Ross won a Honda Motorcycle from Jack Skeers’ shop when she won a competition conducted by Huthwaites and Kayser hosiery.
  • Bruce Vonarx defeated his brother David to win the men’s singles title at the City of Wagga 1971 tennis championships.
  • Talent Beau owned by Neville Bye of Albury and ridden by Lyn Toshack won the 1971 Wagga Gold Cup.
  • Electric blankets are priced from just $6.95 at “The Blanket King” Malvern Star in Baylis Street.
  • Ben Koth & Son are selling second-hand 60lb railway line for 75 cents a foot plus cutting if required.
