25 Years Ago

 

  • Four blocks of land near the site of the proposed North Wagga Lake proved popular with potential buyers at a well-attended auction.

 

  • Junee farmer, Bill Heffernan is planning big changes as the newly elected President of the NSW State Liberal Party.

 

  • Charles Sturt University, lecturer Fred Goldsworthy has been named as recipient of the 1993 Vice Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence.

 

  • A spokesperson for the Wagga AIDS taskforce, Marion Dunn, said several events were being held to raise awareness of AIDS during AIDS Awareness Week.

 

  • Wagga Rotaract judged Vasey Street as Wagga’s “Best Kept Street” and presented an award to Con Salmon, the streets first resident.

 

  • Peak hour traffic in Edward Street was thrown into chaos by the collapse of an old concrete sewer main.

 

  • The CES and combined Wagga Rotary Clubs, “Wagga Job Hunt” launched in Wagga by ACTU secretary, Bill Kelty has created more than 600 jobs in just over a month.

 

  • Pamela Bell and Peter Dunn from Charles Sturt University’s have won a key role in a new multi-university National Rural Health Unit.

 

  • Students from Sturt Public School visited Parliament House in Canberra with teachers, Heather Collins and Judy Cuncombe.

 

  • Harry Hutton, deputy chairman of the Riverina Health Service said that there have been numerous applications for five new highly paid director positions.

 

  • Deputy Mayor, John Harding presented awards to winners of the annual stamp competitive display competition organised by the Wagga Stamp Club and judged by Charles Houen.

 

  • The Defence Housing Authority announced plans to spend a further $2 million constructing 22 dwellings in Wagga.

 

  • Council has approved an application for a proposed childcare centre in Moorong Street valued at $120,000.

 

50 Years Ago

 

  • The Mayor, Ald R J Harris accompanied by Town Clerk, Mr W R Ellis, City Engineer, Mr C Knott and Town Planner, Mr Sel Rawlings presented plans for Wagga’s “Exercise 100,000” to Minister for Decentralisation, Mr Fuller, in Sydney.

 

  • In his annual report, Brother Farrell, Principal of St Michael’s Regional High School said that parents and teachers could be guilty of failing to exact obedience and respect from children.

 

  • Mr Ben Koth who founded, in Wagga, one of the largest structural engineering businesses outside of the capital cities has died.

 

  • Margaret McCrae and Michael Keys of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Fellowship are pictured in the Daily Advertiser assisting in the Community Food Drive for the Smith Family.

 

  • Senior needlework teacher at Mt Erin High School, Mrs G Devine, organised two days of instruction in social deportment and personal care for fourth form students at the school.

 

  • Representatives of most of Wagga’s religious communities attended the first ecumenical service at Wagga’s Carmel of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

 

  • More than 3000 people attended the Kooringal Carnival organised by the Kooringal Community Advancement Fund.

 

  • Ron Graham bowled a brilliant 278 game to record the highest score bowled in a tournament this year at the Wagga Tenpin Bowling Club.

 

  • Committee members of the Community Advancement Fund, Warwick Tomkins and Michael Kennedy presented $1700 to David Manton of the Wagga Basketball Association as a loan to help finance improvements to their facilities at Spring and Moorong Streets.

 

  • Ian Bell, proprietor of Bell’s Soft Drinks presented $100 in crisp $2 notes to fourteen-year-old, Raymond Fuller, winner of the Bell’s Soft Drinks bottle top competition.

 

  • Wagga Cricketer, Phillip Gannon top-scored for Riverina in the first round of the PSAAA carnival against Newcastle in Sydney.
