- Well known Wagga stock and station agent, Bruce Campbell, his son-in-law David Larwood, stock buyer Dallas Gooden and aircraft pilot Don Knight died when their light plane crashed near Coolamon when returning from Longreach.
- Prominent Wagga Pharmacist John Mueller was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by South Wagga Rotary for his outstanding community service over the years.
- Two well-known Wagga men were fined $1000 each after pleading guilty to charges of operating as unlicensed bookmakers.
- Miss Wagga, Carolyn Barby and Community Princess, Marissa Priestly received a send-off at Wagga Airport from the Kapooka Band as they started on their trip to the United States.
- A steering committee of the Riverina Community Railway Preservation Society (RCRPS) chaired by Mark Pottie is seeking to reopen the Wagga to Tumbarumba rail line to operate a tourist train.
- The Riverina Plaza, on the corner of Forsyth and Berry Streets, relaunched after renovations and now includes Freedom Furniture, Wagga Pool Shop, The Clef Retravision, and Berry Terracotta.
- The Director General of the Attorney General’s Department told Wagga solicitors, Tim Abbott, and Robert Stone that Wagga was the most litigious city in NSW outside of Sydney and Newcastle.
- Record breaking jockey, Darren Beadman, was presented with a trophy by the Murrumbidgee Turf Club for his outstanding achievements this season.
- Wagga has won the right to host the 1997 World Trap Shooting Championships.
- A set of keys were lost from the Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre forcing all locks at the Centre to be changed.
- Riverina Health Service manager of aged care, Pam Judge has announced the availability of hip protectors which have been shown to reduce the frequency of fractures in older people who may fall.
- Graeme Burgmann has taken over from Peter Page as president of Kooringal Rotary Club.
- Kooringal High School students, Ryan Miller, Scott Rodgers, and Damon Dickenson won the under 15 school team event at the State cross country titles.
50 Years Ago
- More than 500 people attended the funeral of Mr Stanley Richmond Castles, managing director of Castles Bros. Hardware who was a foundation member of Wagga Apex and active in many community organisations.
- 2nd Wagga Scouts including Spiros and Peter Stathis, Laurence Beer, Stephen Johnson, Simon Crittle and Kevin Watson, swept sheds and washed trucks at the depot of P. E. Power, raising money for “Bob a Job Week”.
- More than 300 delegates and their wives are attending the 33rd annual country convention of the Motor Trader’s Association.
- Leagues Club foundation member, Albert Edghill has been made a life member of the club.
- Geoff Dale won the final of the snooker championships at the Wagga Commercial Cub defeating Lance Thompson by three frames to one.
- Wagga Motors in Fitzmaurice Street is promoting release of the new Holden HG range.
- Father Nicholas has been appointed as the first official clergyman at Wagga’s Greek Orthodox Church.
- The Indonesian Ambassador, Air Vice Marshal Sukirno, in Wagga to open a Community Aid Abroad conference on Indonesia, was welcomed with a Civic Reception by Wagga’s Mayor Ald R J Harris.
- Commanding Officer at Kapooka, Colonel East, commended a parade of more than 60 cadets at the annual Wagga High School Cadet Unit Ceremonial Parade.
- Wagga firm, T A and J G Hoogland has been awarded a contract for construction of the new $214,000 Haven Nursing Home.
- James Rootes celebrated his 21st birthday and is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with his parents, Mr and Mrs Lance Rootes and brothers Wayne and Patrick.
- Coca Cola Bottlers Limited have ceased all production in Wagga and have transferred production facilities to Canberra.
- Pat Coombs was appointed as Riverina distributor for National High-Fidelity Products.
- Lulla Bye Baby Wear in the South Town Walk is clearing girl’s frocks for $5, cardigans and jumpers for $2 and fleecy lined T Shirts for $1.50.
