25 Years Ago

  • Councillor Peter Dale defeated former Mayor Pat Brassil and Councillor Kay Hull in the Mayoral election. Kay Hull was elected Deputy Mayor.
  • Ian and Jenny Williams blamed extended supermarket trading hours for the closure of their Best Street convenience store.
  • The Red Lion Bistro is offering a choice of two roasts served with 5 veges, bread roll and tea or coffee for lunch, Sunday to Friday, for just $5.
  • Foxtrot Dance Studio held a competition night at the Kyeamba Smith Hall with one group of dancers now off to New Zealand to compete.
  • The 1937 Wagga Gold Cup won by Boyfred was handed back to the Murrumbidgee Turf Club and will be put on permanent display at the racecourse.
  • Three Wagga teenagers returning from an 18th birthday party at Collingullie died in a horror crash between their car and a semi-trailer.
  • Almost 60 people turned out for an auction in Thorne Street by LJ Hooker Wagga principal, Wes Russell, of a weatherboard cottage, circa 1910 which was finally sold for $106,000.
  • Sixth Wagga Scout Group celebrated its 40th anniversary which included a reunion of Queens Scouts from the group.
  • Joe Hawkins, who was one of the first members of the NSW mounted police celebrated his 90th birthday with friends in Wagga.
  • Renowned Riverina athlete of the 1930’s, Des Lyons who was tagged “Phar Lap” early in his sprinting career has died in Wagga, aged 78.
  • Outgoing Murrumbidgee Turf Club president Murdoch McLennan has been awarded Life Membership of the Club.
  • Scott Green and Caroline Pledger were winners of the male and female sections of the Wagga Duathlon held at Lake Albert.
  • Henwood Park Hawks won the Wagga Soccer League grand final.
  • Kylie Price has won the Wagga Netball Association’s A grade best and fairest award.
  • About 5000 people converged on Bolton Park to see the “Night Glow” balloon meet coinciding with the inaugural “Festival of the Voice”.
  • Andrew O’Neill from Kooringal Public School has been awarded an Assistant Director General’s Award.

50 Years Ago

  • A large crowd saw Kangaroos beat Magpies 24 to 19 in the M.R.L. final replay at Weissel Oval.
  • Ed Farrah, John Bance, John Kilo, Barry Huthwaite, Dave McLay, Noel Commerford, Graham Hull, Fred Wilson and Keith Boswell are all featured in an advertisement for Hartwigs-Holden in Baylis Street.
  • Mark Gallagher defeated Mike Philpott to win the Men’s Open Singles Championship of the Wagga Squash Association’s Annual Tournament.
  • Coolamon’s star centre half back Allan Hayes celebrated his 21st birthday.
  • North Wagga families began evacuating as the Murrumbidgee River rose to an expected peak of 30ft 6in.
  • Wagga supporters of the Vietnam Moratorium staged a forum in the civic theatre gardens with local speakers including Dr Gerry Flynn, Mr Phil Papworth, Mr Ken Fletcher, and Mr Rod Canden.
  • The Kooringal Public School’s Parents and Citizens Association has called for a second public school to be built in Kooringal on the intersection of Lake Albert Road and White Avenue.
  • East Wagga Australian Rules Football Club has awarded life membership to one of their best-known officials, Mr. Jack Jones.
  • Janelle Plummer competed in the St. George Eisteddfod where she won the aggregate for Highland dancing.
  • Sidchrome tools to be used in the automotive department were presented to principal of the Wagga Technical College, Mr C. Boardman by Wagga distributors, Brookland’s Accessories.
  • Ken Kelsall of “Broughton Brook” is pictured with a Poll Dorset ram which topped the Royal Melbourne Show sales at $2150.
  • The Riverina Group of the CWA presented a cheque for $450 for the Haven Nursing Home Extension Appeal to Mrs W J Hucker, chairman of the Haven Trust.
  • David Jones is clearing ladies fashion shoes for $6.99, boucle knits from $3.99 and furnishing remnants from just 5 cents.
