25 Years Ago

  • Former councillor, Helen Frisby, was elected as president of the Wagga Ratepayers Association with Galva Nitschke continuing as secretary-treasurer and Arthur Rolfe becoming the administrative secretary.
  • Professor Alan Nichol who heads the newly formed CSU School of Wine and Food Sciences said that the University will build a cheese factory beside its winery later this year.
  • Three busloads of Riverina protesters attended a rally outside State Parliament in Sydney to protest radical gun law reform.
  • Reverend Allan Johnston was welcomed as the new senior pastor of the Wagga Baptist Church during a special induction ceremony.
  • Bruce Bowman from Turvey Park Public School received an award for exemplary service to public schools from the Director-General of School Education Dr Ken Boston.
  • The developer of Woolworths $35 million Wagga Marketplace has lashed out at Council accusing it of being confrontational over the issue of access for disabled customers.
  • St Aidan’s Presbyterian Women’s Association celebrated its 60th Anniversary.
  • Mayoress, Barbara Dale, announced that funds raised at this years Wagga Mayoress Ball to go towards Camp Quality Riverina.
  • CSU Vice Chancellor, Dr Cliff Blake, celebrated 25 years as chief Executive officer of the university and its predecessor institutions.
  • Chairman of Radio Cabs (Wagga) Co-operative Society Limited, Bill Prest, said that Wagga taxi cabs may soon become the first non-metropolitan service to operate with an advanced computerised dispatch system.
  • Tourism Wagga Wagga launched five buses carrying promotional messages as part of its celebration of NSW Tourism week.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga recorded its lowest minimum temperature, 22.9°F since records were first kept in 1941.
  • Mobil is in Wagga for the first time with Clarks Corner Service Station open 24 hours on the corner of Edward Street and Station Place.
  • Thirty-five residents have petitioned Council to stop a Peter Street home being used as an RSPCA shelter for dogs and cats.
  • Miss Wagga, Marlene Guppy, assisted by Roberts and Jock Hartwig, flagged away the 32 cars competing in Hartwig’s Motor Rally.
  • Former secretary-manager of the Wagga Police-Citizens Boys Club, Sgt. Pat Kain was farewelled at an RSL Club dinner after 20 years and eight months in the police force.
  • Mayor, Morris Gissing, the Reviewing Officer, inspected RAAF apprentices at a graduation ceremony at Forest Hill.
  • Wagga’s water supply is now fully fluoridated with the installation of equipment at the Wagga pumping station.
  • Keith McGowan succeeded John Mercer as president of the Lions Club of South Wagga at their annual changeover dinner.

  • Wagga City Council authorised on-the-spot litter notices several weeks ago but is yet to issue any $5 fines although a Health Department spokesman said there appeared to be a marked improvement in the cleanliness of city streets.
  • Mrs N Richardson made a clean sweep of the presentation day for the Wagga Women’s Bowling Club and is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with club president, Miss Edyvean.
  • Officer Commanding Forest Hill RAAF Base, Air Commodore G E Prosser and Mrs Prosser welcomed guests to the annual RAAF Winter Ball held in the Officer’s Mess.
  • A new Regional Civil Defence headquarters will be established in Baylis Street.
  • The Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Joseph Post played at Hoyts theatre.
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken in Fitzmaurice Street has reduced the price, for one week, of its Snack Box from 80 cents to 58 cents.
