25 Years Ago

  • An official farewell was held for Wal Breust who has retired from Breust First National Real Estate after 28 years of service.
  • SGE Credit Union in Baylis Street is offering 8.25%pa interest on Term Deposits of nine months.
  • 4500 people flocked to Wagga Showground for the second annual Wagga Swap Meet.
  • Four women, Joan Cheney, Trixie Read, Cherry Lindsay and Anne Brassil from the original steering body for the Wagga Women’s Refugee are pictured in the Daily Advertiser celebrating the centre’s 20th anniversary.
  • Miss Wagga entrants attended an evening of dining etiquette at the Garden Court Restaurant hosted by restaurant proprietor, Simon Terry.
  • Medical Director of the Riverina Rural Training Unit, Peter Macneil said it was hoped that an agreement for Wagga Base Hospital to become an Associated Teaching Hospital of the University of New South Wales was expected by the end of August.
  • Those present at a pre-election seminar for council elections in September included potential candidates, Marie Scott, Jim Rees, Andrew Read, Laurie Richardson, Ron Curtois, Michael Georgiou, Jim Weedon and Kevin Wales.
  • Chelsi Collingwood and Jennie Moynihan from Lyn Irvin’s Hair Studio travelled to Canberra and competed successfully in the ACT Hairdressing awards.
  • A detailed proposal has been submitted to Wagga City Council by the Hampden Bridge Action Committee which could see the Hampden Bridge gain a new life as a street market and ultimately a convention centre.
  • Wagga City Council is holding a free immunisation clinic at the Senior Citizens Centre for babies born after April 1, 1988.
  • Mission Employment students, Michael Sheedy, Brendan Hardman, Trevor Gladman, Glenn Johnston, and Amanda Bland are assisting Kingfisher Pre-school to lay new pavers at the school.
  • More than 110 invited guests are attending the Ambulance Service Southern Division annual formal dinner at the Old Wagga Inn.
  • Tim Doyle won the Wagga Triants Triathlon duathlon at Pomingalarna Reserve with Deanne Burnes the first female to finish.

50 Years Ago

  • 1000 people packed the Wagga RSL Club for a performance by television and recording star Col Joye and his troupe.
  • Chairman of directors, Lloyd Mortlock said that the Wagga Postal Employees Credit Union has made available 955 loans totalling more than a quarter of a million dollars since its inception in 1964.
  • Wagga High School is presenting “West Side Story” at the Civic Theatre with phone bookings available and tickets just $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
  • Edmondson’s are selling Lemair portable typewriters from $49.95 or 40 cents weekly.
  • Ian Inglis, Brian Lawrence, Ian Levy and Lew Butcher starred at Weissel Oval when Wagga High won the Scott Shield series from Christian Brothers two matches to none.
  • Mr C T Carlin Agricultural Machinery Officer of Wagga said that 62 men have been retrenched from 19 farm machinery agents in the Wagga area because of the present economic situation.
  • Andrew McClure, a 16-year-old student from Trinity Senior High School has won a scholarship to attend the 13th annual International Science School at the University of Sydney.
  • John McGill, from BP Australia presented John Throsby (driver) and Ian Butcher (navigator) with a trophy for winning the Wagga and District Car Club Rally.
  • Stop signs will be erected in both directions on Captain Cook Drive at its intersection with Lord Baden Powell Drive.
  • Hore and Davies have for sale at $11,250 a roomy three-bedroom fibro home in an elevated corner position and featuring a Convair Heater in the lounge.
  • Assistant managing director of the Japan Trade Centre in Sydney Mr Shuji Kowaki spoke to a crowd of about 50 people at the Wagga Council Chambers to help promote trade between Japan and Australia.
  • Miss Lucy Kennedy has gained a Queens Guide badge, the highest award a Girl Guide can attain.
  • Deeps Winter Sale includes heavy Twill Flannelette Sheets for $3.50 a pair and Girl’s Flannelette Pyjamas for $1.50 a pair.
