25 Years Ago

  • Radio 2WG breakfast announcer, Scott Levi was presented with a Premiers Award for services to radio and the community by Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp.
  • Wagga City Council’s works committee recommended to Council that conditional approval be given to a new separated carriageway to be constructed in Red Hill Road between Plumpton Road and Bourke Street.
  • Real estate agent, Peter Fitzpatrick has announced plans for the Diocese of Wagga to construct a retirement village on the site of the old Wagga City Bowling Club purchased by the Catholic Church last year.
  • Wagga Sunrise Rotary, the first Rotary Club in the district to include women members is now the first Rotary Club in the district to have a female President with Jan French now in the top job.
  • The first four church bells in a planned peal of eight were installed in the tower of St John’s Anglican Church with chairman of the Church’s Bell committee, James Hamilton on hand to assist.
  • The RAAF Central Band provided musical support for a march through the city by Wagga RAAF personnel exercising their Freedom of the City granted in 1961.
  • The Festival of Wagga was launched with Mayor Peter Dale, President Mark Hull and Festival Coordinator, Donna Hartwig displaying the program in the Daily Advertiser.
  • Health authorities are alarmed at an outbreak of whooping cough with eleven cases reported in Wagga in the last fortnight.
  • Long serving director of St Luke’s pre-school, Helen Brill, is leaving to take up a new position in Tathra.
  • Margaret Cullen, John Mason, John Sheehan, Father Paul Boyers and Max Sydenham were among those attending celebrations for the South Wagga Catholic Parish, 40th Anniversary.
  • Tourism Wagga Wagga, chairwoman Kay Hull said that the introduction of march out parades at Kapooka almost every Monday was the most significant factor increasing visitor numbers over the last year.
  • Members of the 1B Wagga Brownie troop including Lindsay Burke and Asha McDonald visited McDonald’s restaurant for a look behind the scenes to see how it works.
  • Target has quashed speculation that it is planning to open a store in Wagga on a site next to Grace Bros presently occupied by the Baylis Street Caltex Service Station.
  • A Wagga man who broke into a local home and sold his haul from the burglary, worth more than $5000 for $120 to buy alcohol and drugs was jailed for a minimum term of nine months.

50 Years Ago

  • Kyeamba Shire President, Mr Ron Klimpsch handed over the keys to a new $10,000 fire tanker to the Shire’s brigade president, Mr Jim Reynolds and secretary Mr David Dunn.
  • Mrs Marjorie Hamill was installed as Governor of the 31st District at a three-day District Quota International Conference held at Young.
  • Bob Hogan, Fred Willis, and Wal Blake from Wagga Commercial Club won the final of the Wagga and District Bowling Association State Triples.
  • Farrer League Princess for 1970, Miss Kristine Ings, is congratulated by Member for Farrer, David Fairbairn at the Farrer League Ball held at the Wagga Police Boys Club.
  • Wagga area chairman, Jack Skeers said that donations from this weeks Freedom from Hunger Appeal would be less than other years.
  • A S Brunskill & Co at “Old Borambola” are advertising flock rams and stud rams from their Dalkeith stud, the third oldest border leicester stud in Australia.
  • Ald Arthur French presented the Riverina Bottlers trophy to Stephen Martin, judged the most outstanding player in the senior section of the Wagga sub-junior Rugby League this year.
  • Miss Margaret Maree McCrea and Mr Michael James Keys were married in St Andrews Presbyterian Church with a honeymoon following in Norfolk Island.
  • Ray Weaven was presented with Turvey Park Clubs best and fairest award by Arthur Dixon, president of the Wagga Rugby League.
  • High School teachers, Miss Marie Gow and Mr John Spinks are pictured in the Daily Advertiser dancing at a banquet and farewell night for Wagga High School sixth formers held at St John’s Parish Hall.
  • Det Sgt John Cameron has been appointed as an additional detective to the Criminal Investigation Branch at Wagga.
  • Mrs N E Condon was presented with a Red Cross long service badge by Mrs Wal Fife at a garden party conducted at the home of Mrs C Robertson in Peter Street.
  • Miss Pat Bromham won the Miss Rugby League title conducted by Wagga Kangaroos this season.
  • The 44th St Andrews Spring Rose Show was held.
