25 Years Ago

  • Wagga Mayor, Peter Dale is elated that Heinz has decided to consolidate meat processing operations at the Southern Country Foods plant in Wagga.
  • General manager, John Barnes said that Riverina Wool Combing had put on 16 new workers to meet increasing demand.
  • Wagga City Council Rural Fire Control Officer, Joe Knox is pictured, in the Daily Advertiser, in the communications room of the new Rural Fire Control Centre in Fernleigh Road.
  • Council’s road safety officer, Vicki Case, has delivered 1,000 questionnaires to help Wagga City Council determine current and potential use of bikeways.
  • A break-in at a Bomen cafe for the second time in a week is threatening to force a small businesswoman to the wall.
  • More than 50 string musicians have converged on Charles sturt University for the tenth annual Summer School for Strings.
  • Former Wagga musician, Clare Brassil who now resides in Melbourne was one of the performers at an evening concert staged last night by tutors attending the Summer School for Strings.
  • Wagga businesspeople including Mick Byrne and Tony Amos are among those joining a delegation travelling to Malaysia’s northern states soon.

  • Margaret Mullins, Roland Bannister, and Graham Terry have taken up music appointments with the Riverina College of Advanced Education.
  • President of the Wagga and District sub-branch of the Australian Hotels Association, Mr Sullivan claimed Riverina Clubs are undercutting hotels in bottled beer sales by up to three cents.
  • Shirley Cooper Frock Shop “Genuine Summer Sale” includes frocks from $4 and all remaining shorts, slacks, blouses, skirts, and tops to clear at $2 to $4.
  • Doug Willers is advertised in the Daily Advertiser by Rava’s as their small home appliance technician.
  • There were 1145 babies born in Wagga in 1971, about 80 more than in 1970.
  • Miss J L Potter has replaced Matron E White as Superintendent of Nursing Staff at Wagga Base Hospital.
  • Gordon Braid, assistant manager of Wagga Motors Pty Ltd has been re-elected country vice-president of the Motor Traders Association of NSW.

  • Mr E J Ellis has replaced Mr C J Boardman as principal of the Wagga Technical College.
