25 Years Ago

  • Nineteen-year-old journalist Shannon Dunn was crowned Miss Wagga and Ardene Firth crowned as Miss Community Princess.
  • Mayor, Peter Dale led an historic centenary crossing of the Hampden Bridge including Member for Wagga Joe Schipp and his wife Rhonda, Annie Hicks, Beth McLean, Member for Riverina, Noel Hicks and Council general manager, Brian Andrews.
  • Wagga’s proposed northern lake is under threat with a shock move by Cr Jim Eldridge for the ambitious project to be scrapped.
  • At the second annual Real Estate Institute Dinner, recently retired real estate agent, Wal Breust, was presented with an NSW REI service award to recognise his 26 years of service.
  • Traditional street parties on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve are likely to continue this year in Sturt Street but not Fitzmaurice Street following a recommendation of Council’s environmental services committee.
  • Kendell Airlines is planning a new $1 million hanger at Wagga Airport for maintenance work on its fleet of aircraft.
  • Buy Rite Pharmacies are selling 36 exposure Kodak colour film for $4.65 and Kodak VHS video tape E180 for $3.65.
  • Angry Wagga TAFE teachers have threatened rolling strikes in a bid to block widespread reforms to the TAFE system.

  • Wagga apprentice, Greg Adams was awarded the Jim Braid Memorial Award for excellence in the final year of automotive engineering at TAFE.
  • Children’s author and romance writer, Margaret McAlister, launched the latest publication of Wagga Wagga Writers Writers entitled four W No. 6 at Booranga Writers Centre.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga RSL sub-branch president, Mr Harold Fife was presented with life membership of the RSL, the highest honour the League can bestow on a member.
  • Brian Andrews from Wagga City Council and veterinary surgeon, Keith Hawkins have been selected to spend eight weeks in Illinois, USA as members of a Rotary Group Study Exchange Program.
  • Concerns are being raised that Fokker F28 jets to be introduced soon on the Wagga-Sydney route have been scheduled to depart up to an hour and three-quarters later than at present.
  • More than 400 people attended a special concert at the Civic Theatre to welcome home the Bishop of Wagga, Dr F A Carroll who has returned recently from a world tour.
  • Mrs L Horsley, Mrs N Smith, Mrs K Dunn, and Mrs F Alberni were among those attending a luncheon at the home of Mrs G Knight of Red Hill Road with proceeds to aid the Carmelite Monastery.
  • Mayor, Alderman Harris officially opened new extensions to the Zebra Motel in Morgan Street.
  • Mr Frank Amery has been appointed as manager of Wagga’s Rural Bank branch.
  • Seven Wagga cricketers including captain, Stan Dasey, have been selected in the Riverina team to play Murrumbidgee.
  • Discussions were held at the Wagga Bathing Beach between Mr Ian Bell from the Beach Lifesaving Club and Mr John Huthwaite of South Wagga Apex about ways to encourage more youth to join the club and patrol the beach during the coming summer.
  • Service station operators met with Minister for Mines and Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife, over concerns about the sale of cut-price petrol direct from oil company depots.
  • Wagga City Gas Centre and the Southern Riverina County Council have donated new gas and electricity ranges to the home science section of Wagga High School.
  • Edmondsons are advertising for junior shop assistants aged from 15 to 18 with females needed in delicatessen, haberdashery and cosmetics and males for the hardware department.
  • Santa made a pre-Christmas visit to Baylis Street riding in his sleigh pulled by a reindeer.
  • Huthwaites Food Fair is selling half gallon ice-cream tubs for 62 cents, Arnott’s Sao, and Milk Coffee biscuits for 15 cents and No. 11 chickens for $1.59.
