25 Years Ago

  • The new $2 million Junee to Bomen Link Road was officially opened by Wagga Mayor, Peter Dale and Junee Mayor, Graeme Robertson.
  • Wagga’s friends of the ABC including Riverina branch president, Richard Lansdown and campaign committee member, Fred Goldsworthy organised a mass postcard signing campaign at the Sturt Mall.
  • After a career beginning 36 years ago with Southern Riverina County Council, general manager of Southern Riverina Electricity and Water, John Goldsworthy has decided to call it a day.
  • The Wagga branch of the Commonwealth Employment Service (CES) celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
  • Wagga Councillor, Chris Miller has taken a voluntary redundancy after 27 years in the public service and Mayor, Peter Dale and his wife, Barbara are taking up positions as the new management team at the Townhouse Motor Inn.
  • Leading country music commentator, Nick Erby touted Wagga’s Darren Coggan as having the potential to be one of the industry’s biggest names.
  • Six students from Ashmont Public School won distinction or high distinction awards in an Australia-wide computer competition.
  • Wagga Swimming Club members Kelly King 14, Ashley Tucker 17 and Elizabeth McDonald 16 have been ranked in the top ten of the NSW State age rankings.
  • Alternative designs for planter boxes in Fitzmaurice Street are under consideration by Wagga City Council with consultations including Ian Graham, Bob Connolly, Neville Harvey, and Frank Barrett.
  • NSW Farmer’s Association president, Ian Donges delivered the opening address at a Riverina Outlook Conference held at the Charles Sturt University Conference Centre.
  •  In a Daily Advertiser poll, Wagga’s citizens laughed off a change in National anthem from Advance Australia Fair to Waltzing Matilda suggested by Premier, Bob Carr.
  • Lake Albert Public School student, Stephen Lloyd, received a distinction in the Australian/Overseas Computer Competition open to Year 6, 7 and 8 students.
  • Knights Meats have a Lamb Sale with Loin chops, $5.45 per kg, Legs of Lamb, $4.90 per kg and Shoulders, $6.90 per Kg.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga City Council is hosting more than 700 delegates and observers for the annual conference of the NSW Local Government Association.
  • A vice-regal dinner, attended by Governor Sir Roden Cutler and Lady Cutler preceded the opening of the NSW Local Government Conference.
  • 2WG office manager, Mrs Yvonne Braid has been acknowledged for her support in the successful development of the Haven complex going back to 1958 when she was first employed as a receptionist-typist at the radio station.
  • The new Mini Clubman is available for test drive from All Cars in Fitzmaurice Street.
  • Eight new shops, including Fraser’s Nursery, have opened at the Kooringal Mall.
  • Wagga Fire Station Officer, L Gallagher, Captain C Day, and volunteer firemen, F J Lynn, M H Guthrie, and P O Smith received Queens Awards for Exemplary Long Service.
  • Myee and Rex Baumer from Baumer’s Swimming Academy will soon open their indoor, heated teaching pool in Morgan Street.
  • Graham Kennedy has been appointed for his sixth year as coach of Wagga Kangaroos.
  • South Wagga Bowling Club elected Ron Harrison as president, succeeding Alec Cross who was elected as club patron after five years as president.
  • Suzanne Staines, an 18-year-old pharmacy assistant, was chosen as Miss Leroy 1971 at a parade of Spring fashions organised by Huthwaites.
  • Hundreds of people attended a special “Beating of the Retreat” ceremony by a contingent from the Kapooka Military Camp.
  • Ald W F Brennan, chairman of the Murrumbidgee Regional Development Committee expressed disappointment at the attitude of the Federal Government following a decentralisation conference in Canberra.
  • Mr Richard Gorman, standing for the first time drew pole position on the ballot paper for Wagga City Council’s triennial election to be held on 25th September.
  • Turvey Park Australian Rules coach Graham Ion watched by former player Alan Grentell presented a cheque for $67 to Kurrajong School for Retarded Children principal, Mrs W L Hurd.
  • Bill Burroughs has been appointed new manager of the Wagga branch of Commercial Machines Pty Ltd replacing Bill Ogle who has returned to Sydney.
  • Edmondson’s are selling Rosella Tomato Sauce, 10 oz for 18 cents, Pal meat for dogs, 14 oz for 18 cents and Mountain Maid Corn Nibbles, 10 oz for 16 cents.
