25 Years Ago

  • Prominent Wagga locals, Nancye Piercy and Bruce Jarratt along with former Wagga local Campbell Egan were recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.
  • Two buildings at Charles Sturt University have been named in honour of university pioneers, Dr Henry Gardiner, and Dr Edwin Brooks.
  • WIN Television has cut back news staff in Wagga, incorporating the Wagga-only service into a western NSW regional news service covering Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, and Wagga regions.
  • Wagga orthopaedic surgeon, Alan Nicholls is joining United Nations peacekeepers in Rwanda as a member of an Australian Army surgical team.
  • Helen Perryman, co-owner of Wagga tourist attraction, Murray Cod Hatcheries announced that their popular fauna park will be closed.
  • Wagga’s richest person, Stan Henwood has sold one of his Queensland cattle stations for more than $12 million.
  • Former Australian Labor Party candidate for Wagga and long serving member of the Wagga branch of the ALP, Ken Fletcher has died following a long illness.
  • Wagga Rotarian, Arthur Nixon has played an important role in raising $33,000 to fund a pipeline to supply clean water to 14 native villages near Mt Hagen in Papua New Guinea.

50 Years Ago

  • Six Wagga girls have been chosen in a team managed by Miss P Bush from Wagga to represent Riverina in the girls Stated hockey carnival to be held in Sydney.

  • Huthwaites are advertising a Formal Wear Hire Service in the Daily Advertiser with Men’s Dinner Suits available from $7, Bows for 40 cents and White Gloves for 40 cents.
  • MDC plain and flavoured milk is now available in new non-returnable cartons.
  • Wagga High School students, Lew Butcher and Brian Lawrence have been selected in the NSW schoolboys open rugby league team to tour Queensland.
  • City Engineer, Mr C Knott has been directed by Wagga City Council to prepare detailed plans for the development of a 100-acre industrial estate on Hammond Avenue.
  • A Victorian meat industry representative was elbowed and punched when he banned 53 pens of sheep from export at the Wagga Saleyards.
