25 Years Ago

  • John Harding, director of the international office at Charles Sturt University is preparing to welcome 90 students as the largest ever group of full-time overseas students to arrive at CSU’s Wagga campus.
  • John Stewart was elected as Wagga Show Society president and Pat Koetz as senior vice-president with new vice-presidents Doug Millward and Brett Grant.
  • CETV announced that its PAY TV service to be launched in Wagga next month would be the first pay television service in regional Australia.
  • The alcohol-free zone in Baylis and Fitzmaurice Street has been extended by Wagga City Council for another 12 months but not extended to surrounding Streets much to the disappointment of police.
  • Veterans and members of the public gathered at the Victory Memorial Gardens to commemorate the anniversary of the fall of Singapore to Japanese forces during World War II.
  • Richard Tate and Peter Krychaluk received awards recognising 15 years of accident-free driving from managing director of Finemores Transport, Ron Finemore.
  • Wagga Rotary Club president Hany Hanna is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with organising committee members of the second annual “All About Kids Expo”.
  • RSL Wagga Sub-Branch president, David Gardiner presented scholarships to local high school students, Chantelle Dixon, Tiana Salmon, Kalysa Rooke and Emma Smith.
  • Riverine Cricket Club vice president, David Benn has discussed a possible, Golden Oldies mini-cricket festival for Wagga with Frank O’Dwyer, a member of the Golden Oldies International Council.
  • Riverina Labor candidate, Rob Colligan claimed that the Murray and Murrumbidgee regions were among the fastest growing in the State.
  • Organic vegetable grower, Brian Connolly has opened a shop in The Australian Arcade to offer chemical-free naturally grown food.
  • Four hundred pupils attended, and three new records were set at the Lake Albert Public School Swimming Carnival held at the Bolton Park Swimming and Recreation Centre.
  • Holy Trinity Primary School Leaders for 1996 are school captains, Brodie O’Connor and Chris Sheahan with vice-captains, Frances Reid, and Aidan Mullen.
  • Kooringal Athletics Club sent 66 members to Dubbo for the Little Athletics Region Five championships.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s population at the end of June 1970 was estimated to be 28,330, which was 1,000 more than Albury.
  • Teachers College principal, Mr M E Hale said that this year’s enrolments, were more than 80 above last year’s enrolments with an increasing number of students requiring non-campus accommodation.
  • Huthwaites hardware department is selling supplies of ammunition for the opening of the Duck Season.
  • Justice R Else-Mitchell is pictured in the Daily Advertiser unveiling a plaque on the new centenary wing at the Wagga Historical Society Museum with society president, Keith Swan, vice-president, Mrs S Walsh and Wagga’s Mayor, Ald. Morris Gissing.
  • Victoria trailed NSW by “a long way” according to members of the Warrnambool Development and Promotion Board who are visiting Wagga.
  • The Wagga sub-branch of the R.S.L. has announced Leslie Ann Quinlivan, Patricia Ann Marshall, Christopher Jenner, and Eric Charles Martin as the winners of high school scholarships.
  • Quarter hour parking restrictions have been imposed outside the Wagga and South Wagga Post Offices following representations by the Wagga and District Chamber of Commerce.
  • Central Riverina League star footballer, Noel Jarvis was farewelled by Bert Schmidt before leaving on a six-week tour of duty in Vietnam.
  • The Grade III choir of Sacred Heart School at Kooringal, with teacher, Mrs R Smith, were awarded the best mark in the State for Choral Speech in their grade.
  • Sister M Stephen is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with School Captain, Mary-Jane Hodson and the other 1971 captains and prefects of St. Mary’s Catholic School.
  • The Mayor, Ald. Morris Gissing presented Trinity High School leaders, including captain, Paul McCoy and vice-captains Peter Gooden and Diane McNuff, with their badges.
  • Newly elected captains at Wagga High School, Howard Beaton, and Laurel Rowe together with twenty-seven prefects received their badges of office.
  • Four people were rushed to Wagga Base Hospital after an inboard power boat burst into flames on Lake Albert.
  • Edmondson’s Food Markets in Gurwood and Bourke Street have Arnott’s SAO or Shredded Wholemeal biscuits for 13 cents a packet, Nescafe 6oz for 85 cents and Heinz Tomato sauce 20 oz for 29 cents.
