25 Years Ago

  • New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve festivities in Sturt Street are to be outlawed following consideration by a working party made up of senior police, Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp, Mayor Peter Dale, and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, PCYC, AHA and Wagga media.
  • Wagga Base Hospital Children’s ward is under pressure as an extra five beds were crammed in to cope with a rapid influx of sick children.
  • During a visit to the Wagga Police Station, Premier Bob Carr described the Sturt Street station as inadequate, and unsatisfactory.
  • Members of Wagga’s Volunteer Rescue Association, Melanie Fitzsimmons, Mark Gain, John Johnstone, and John Rooke have returned from Thredbo after joining in the rescue effort there to find landslide victims.
  • Former Wagga woman, Sarah Craig, 25, has been appointed Cathay Pacific’s first Australian female pilot.
  • Wagga historian, John Winterbottom is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Premier Bob Carr during his visit to the Wagga and District Historical Museum.
  • Stephen Marchant has been appointed as the new director of schools for the Wagga Catholic Diocese following the resignation of Peter O’Brien.
  • St Michael’s Art and Craft Show is on again in a tradition that has lasted 19 years with artists this year including Greg Hansell, Margo Pollard, Nancye Rew, Colleen Whittaker, and Margaret Jolly.
  • Riverina Institute of TAFE and regional CES offices have combined to introduce an innovative trading programme to assist unemployed people.
  • Dawn Weir donated new treatment stools, scales, table, and games to Wagga Base Hospital’s Robinson House after her daughter, Kelly underwent rehabilitation treatment there.
  • Wagga Commercial Bowling Club closed its two bowling greens with most members dispersing to join the four other clubs in Wagga.
  • Anne Gladman, Deanne Moore, Vicki Fairbank, Irwin Cozens, Karen Ward, Deidre Rosler and Lola Lincoln, were among 25 Caloola Court Nursing Home staff who completed the highly regarded Aussie Host program.
  • Darren Coggan launched his new album, Hometown, in front of a packed house at the Civic Theatre.
  • Anthony Paul was the chief auctioneer at a fundraising auction of sporting memorabilia held by the Riverina Academy of Sport during a trivia evening held at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • The Red Nose Ball was held at the Wagga RSL club to raise money for research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

50 Years Ago

  • House prices in Wagga have increased by at least $1800 in the past 12 months with Wagga’s average home price now, $18,073.
  • Rector of South Wagga Church of England, Reverend Owen Dowling has been appointed Rector of St. John’s Church, Canberra.
  • A record number of more than 700 Wagga and district people took part in a 30-kilometre Walk Against Want yesterday raising a total of $4100.
  • Minister for Mines and Power, and member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife said that natural gas is expected to be available to industrial and domestic consumers in New South Wales towards the end of 1975.
  • Legacy President Mr F H Cook, together with Mr John Woods, Mr Pat Hanley, and Mr L C Longley, were among those attending a Legacy Conference held in Wagga this week.
  • More than 50 people were turned away at the Civic Theatre from a sell-out performance of the “Magic Pudding” by The Marionette Theatre.
  • Area Director of Education, Mr L A Findlay announced that Mr F G Nethery had been appointed as principal of the new Kooringal High School which opens next year.
  • Almost 28,000 lambs were yarded at the weekly sale conducted by Wagga Associated Agents, with some lambs fetching $16.15 and current high levels the best for 16 years.
  • Paul Hunter has been elected Wagga Cricket Association president, succeeding John Brazier, who stood down after three years. Brian Lawrence was re-appointed secretary for his eighth successive term, and Bill Inglis, treasurer for his 12th successive year.
  • Wagga Lions Club combined with South Wagga Lions Club at a dinner dance to celebrate 25 years of service by Lions International in Australia.
  • $300 raised at the Wagga Bankers Golf Day held at the Wagga Country Club was presented to Mr Bill Herd representing the Kurrajong School.
  • Chef Bill Taylor is pictured in the Daily Advertiser serving food at one of the new smorgasbord luncheons introduced for members of the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Farmers met in Wagga for the annual meeting of the NSW branch of Organised Purchasing Power.
  • Edmondson’s is selling SAO biscuits, 8 oz packet for 19 cents, Big Sister Plum Pudding 12 oz tins for 29 cents and Colgate toothpaste economy size for 37 cents.
