25 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s Garden Court Restaurant was a big winner with two major awards in the Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence held in Canberra.
  • West Wagga parish priest, Father Mick Burgess, is celebrating forty years since his ordination into the priesthood.
  • Wagga Man, Eric Barter, national president of the Light Horse Association is urging Riverina children to visit the association website in the lead-up to Anzac Day.
  • About 600 rural stakeholders, representing country councils, community groups, and rural organisations from across New South Wales are gathering for the second NSW Country Summit being held at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Wagga’s Cantilena Singers wowed an audience of 1500 people who stamped their feet and called for an encore during a full-scale opera in Wagga’s sister Nordlingen.
  • Former Wagga businessman, Ross Wooden called for more police patrols after he was held at bay by a knife-wielding teenager in a Marketplace car park.
  • The Battle of the Sounds is about to begin at the Duke of Kent Hotel with categories for Country, Rock, and Solo or Duo.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga City Engineer, Mr Colin Knott, has been directed to prepare a three-point plan for relocation of the Wagga Saleyards to Bomen.
  • Mr Cec Carmody announced that the freehold of the Turvey Tavern has been sold to a Sydney Company with the manager for the last three and a half years, Tom Looney, nominated by the new licensees to continue in this position.
  • Wagga City Engineer, Mr Colin Knott said that plans for the first stage of the deviation of the Sturt Highway have been prepared for study and approval by the Department of Main Roads.
  • The new Temora Historical Museum was officially opened by the Mayor of Temora, Ald MacAuley.
  • Breust’s Real Estate is advertising a freehold milk run with excellent return and no opposition for $17,500.
  • Graeme Clifton was among a total of 37 graduates who received diplomas from Wagga Agricultural College principal, Mr B F Atkins at the College’s annual graduation ceremony.

  • Wagga City Council arranged a civic reception to mark Rev D Mackenzie-Baird’s, 25th anniversary as minister of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
  • Mrs Cheryl Francis celebrated her 21st birthday with family and friends at the Postal Institute Hall.
  • Patroness of the Wagga RSL Women’s Auxiliary, Mrs C Graham, presented the retiring treasurer, Mrs E Wild with a vivid two-tone blue rug at a meeting of the auxiliary.
  • Mercedes Benz dealer, Merlo Motors has renovated their showroom at 129 Fitzmaurice Street.
  • Mount Austin dominated the combined Wagga High Schools’ annual championship swimming carnival held at the Wagga City Baths.
  • Mr Wal Fife, Minister for Mines and Power and Member for Wagga inspected Electricity Commission installations in the Wagga District for the first time since taking on the new portfolio of Power.
  • Leeton caused the biggest upset of the season when they thrashed previously unbeaten Wagga in the O’Farrell Cup challenge match at Robertson Oval.
